Annie is a 1982 American musical comedy-drama based on Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin, and Thomas Meehan's 1977 Broadway musical of the same name, which is based on Harold Gray's Little Orphan Annie comic strip. Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, Geoffrey Holder, Edward Herrmann, and Aileen Quinn star in the picture, which was directed by John Huston and written by Carol Sobieski. Storyline: Annie

Annie is a little orphan living in the Hudson Street Orphanage in New York City in 1933, during the Great Depression. Agatha Hannigan, a vicious alcoholic who has the orphans clean the building every day, runs it. Her only item is half of a locket, and she remains hopeful that her parents, who abandoned her as a newborn in the doorway, will return for her. Annie escapes with the help of Mr. Bundles, the laundry guy, and adopts a stray dog named Sandy. However, Annie is returned to the orphanage by a police officer.

Grace Farrell, millionaire Oliver Warbucks' secretary, arrives to ask an orphan to stay with him for a week to boost his public image. Annie and Sandy are picked, and they travel to Warbucks' mansion, where they meet his many servants as well as two bodyguards, Punjab and the Asp. Warbucks, who was initially contemptuous of Annie owing to her gender, is eventually persuaded to let her stay. He brings Annie and Grace to see a movie at Radio City Music Hall, and Warbucks develops feelings for Annie. Grace encourages him to adopt Annie, so he meets with Miss Hannigan and persuades her to sign the adoption papers.

Annie is informed of Warbucks' plans, and he even offers her a new locket, but she declines. She explains why her necklace is broken and how she hopes her parents will come back with the second part. On Bert Healy's radio show, Daddy Warbucks offers $50,000 to identify Annie's parents. Many would-be parents appear to claim the money, causing tremendous hysteria. To get away from the turmoil, Warbucks flies Annie to Washington, D.C., where she meets President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. Roosevelt tells them about his proposal to start a social welfare program to benefit the poor in America, and he invites Warbucks to lead it; Annie pushes him to do so. When Annie returns home, Grace informs her that none of the possible parents were aware of the locket.

Hannigan receives a visit from her con artist brother, Rooster, and his girlfriend, Lily St. Regis, who plan to impersonate Annie's parents in order to receive a reward. Hannigan admits Annie's parents died, and she has the other half of the locket, while the trio searches for the orphans' possessions. Annie's pals overhear the talk and attempt to flee, but are apprehended and imprisoned. Rooster and Lily pull off the trick, and Annie leaves Warbucks in a gloomy mood. Minutes after leaving, Annie is kidnapped, but her pals reach Warbucks and tell him the truth; he alerts the cops, who launch a city-wide hunt.

Annie persuades the criminals to stop over, only for them to flee and destroy Warbucks' check. The Rooster pursues Annie across a bridge in an attempt to kill her; Hannigan does not want Annie to be wounded, but he is powerless to stop him. Punjab saves Annie and brings her back together with Warbucks and Grace. Rooster and Lily are apprehended, and Warbucks officially adopts Annie. Warbucks gives Annie the new locket as they hug during a party attended by the orphans, a redeemed Hannigan, and the Roosevelts.

Some trifles: Annie

Two years, 22 cities, 8,000 interviews, and 70 actresses went through auditions for the title role. In the second round, nine young actresses were chosen.

The role of Rooster was offered to Steve Martin. When he learned he'd be working alongside Bernadette Peters, he declined. He didn't want to work with her for several months because they were breaking up at the time.

The producers gave Aileen Quinn a special comb to scratch her head because her red curly wig was itchy.

Carol Burnett told Terry Gross in a 2003 interview on National Public Radio's "Fresh Air" that she had plastic surgery on her chin after filming wrapped, which significantly changed the appearance of her lower face. Ray Stark called her back in after the surgery to re-shoot a scene from "Easy Street." Miss Hannigan, Burnett joked, went into her office closet and came out two months later with a new chin.

Dale Hennesy, the production designer, died in the middle of the shoot. Gene Callahan agreed to finish the film but insisted on having his name removed from the credits in favor of the late Hennesy.

Despite being the tenth highest-grossing film of 1982, it failed to turn a profit due to its astronomically high production costs.

To achieve a PG rating, the lines "Goddammit!" and "Come back here, ya Goddamned kid!" were added. Only parents with small children were expected to see a G-rated live-action film, according to the studio.

Grace Farrell brought the adoption papers to the orphanage in the play. Carol Burnett and Albert Finney lobbied the songwriters for a song to sing together to flesh out the only meeting between Warbucks and Hannigan after the movie script had Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks do it. "Sign," their duet, was written in two days.

To play Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks, Albert Finney shaved his head. Because his hair had grown back, Aileen Quinn didn't recognize him when she met him at the film's premiere.

Mistakes: Annie

  • Camille is featured in the film, which bears the MGM logo from 1957. In the same scene, Shirley Temple, who was unknown until 1934, is mentioned.
  • The girls are still on the floor talking to each other as the orphans are imprisoned in the closet and Pepper tries to escape through the ceiling. None of them speak when they are visible.
  • Two servants, presumably for Mr. Warbucks, set the table during "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here." The delicately set glasses are knocked over by one of the maids.
  • In block letters, Daddy Warbucks writes a cheque to "Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mudge." Mrs. Mudge's cheque is written in cursive when it is seen in her hand.
  • After Annie taps dances behind the curtain during "Let's Go to the Movies," Grace emerges and they continue dancing. A crew member is mirrored in the vanity mirror behind them while the camera circles around.
  • The residence of Daddy Warbucks is located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. His property, on the other hand, is bordered by acres of countryside meadows. Even in 1933, such an acreage would not have been found in Manhattan's already developed urban setting. rather than in the city, but in the countryside.
  • A gyrocopter can't hover or even slow down to less than 25 mph. To keep the rotor spinning and stay in the air, it must sustain forward speed, just like a typical airplane. Slowing it down sufficiently for someone to grab a rope ladder would be impossible.
  • During "Little Girls," Miss Hannigan drinks alcohol. The film takes place in 1933 when alcohol was still illegal in the United States. People did, however, frequently brew their alcohol, often in a bathtub. Later in "Sign," Warbucks mentions "bathtub gin," and Hannigan closes the song by stepping into a full bathtub. With the liquid from the tub, she splashes Warbucks in the face. Warbucks rubs his palm down his cheek, licks his fingers, and makes a face, implying that the bathtub is brimming with homemade booze.
  • Miss Hannigan is knocked out by Rooster before the bridge climb, and his punch connects before he touches her.
