A Christmas Story is a 1983 American Christmas comedy film directed by Bob Clark and based on semi-fictional anecdotes from Jean Shepherd's 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, with some aspects from his 1971 book Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories And Other Disasters. It is a Christmas classic in North America, starring Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley. It has been shown on television numerous times, usually on WarnerMedia networks, and since 1997, a marathon of the film titled "24 Hours of A Christmas Story" has aired annually on TNT or TBS, consisting of 12 consecutive airings of the film from the evening of Christmas Eve to the evening of Christmas Day. It's frequently regarded as one of the best Christmas movies. On November 18, 1983, the picture was released.

It won two Canadian Genie Awards in 1984, because it was partly shot in Canada. The Library of Congress chose it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2012 because it was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important."

Storyline: A Christmas Story

The movie is told in vignettes, with narration provided by an adult Ralphie Parker reminiscing about a specific Christmas when he was nine years old. That Christmas, Ralphie only wanted one thing: a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Ralphie's wish is denied by his mother, his teacher, Miss Shields, and even Santa Claus from Higbee's department store, who all tell him, "You'll shoot your eye out."

When Ralphie wakes up on Christmas morning, he immediately begins unwrapping his gifts. He does receive some gifts that he appreciates, but he is sad that he did not receive the one item that he desired most. When the father urges him to look at one last present that he had concealed, it appears that all of the presents have been opened. The Red Ryder gun is revealed when Ralphie opens it.

Ralphie takes his gun outdoors and fires it at a target affixed to a metal sign in the yard. The BB, on the other hand, ricochets and knocks his spectacles off. He steps on them and breaks them while searching for them, believing he had truly shot his eye out. He tells his mother that his glasses were broken by a falling icicle, and she believes him. On Christmas Eve, Ralphie is lying in bed with his rifle by his side. This was the best present Ralphie had ever received, according to the adult Ralphie.

Some trifles: A Christmas Story

Jean Shepherd is the enraged shopper in the department store's Santa line. His wife, Leigh Brown, is the woman standing behind him.

Bob Clark: Swede, the dimwitted next-door neighbor who admires the Leg Lamp from the street.

A secret suction tube was employed to carefully create the illusion that Flick's tongue had frozen to the metal in the scene where his tongue sticks to the flagpole.

While wrestling with the furnace, Darren McGavin improvised nasty rants. He claims he speaks nonsense the entire time because it's very impossible for him to improvise angry words without swearing. He did this to ensure that the film received a "PG" rating.

The incoherent words that Ralphie yells while beating up Scut Farkas were scripted word for word, according to Peter Billingsley (young Ralphie) in the DVD commentary.

According to Peter Billingsley, a story about a little boy in the 1940s who wanted a BB pistol for Christmas piqued the interest of a few major studios. The studio agreed to create this picture if Bob Clark agreed to make a horror film, according to Billingsley.

The original home used for the exterior shots of the family home was put up for auction on eBay in 2005, and passionate movie fan Brian Jones bought it for $150,000 directly from the seller. Jones then spent the next year restoring the house to its original appearance on screen. The outside was repaired, and the interior was refurbished to match the property featured in the film (parts of the interior were filmed in a Toronto studio). The mansion ultimately opened its doors as a tourist attraction on November 25, 2006. Jones spent about $500,000 preparing for the grand opening. He also bought property across the street and turned it into a souvenir shop and a museum dedicated to the movie and the home.

The picture was unexpectedly successful when it was released just before Thanksgiving. The movie had already been pulled from most theaters by the time Christmas came around because it had "played out." Following protests by the theater owners and the studio, the picture was only shown on a few screens until January 1, 1984.

Cleveland residents were tremendously helpful during filming, donating old cars from all across the city. The authenticity of the production design was enhanced by the use of old cars. The antique vehicle club members whose automobiles were used were given a course to follow in Public Square during the filming in downtown Cleveland. They were told to keep circling the plaza until they were told otherwise. Road salt was a major issue for the car owners, so after each day of filming, the automobiles were pressure washed and parked underground beneath the Terminal Tower.

Mistakes: A Christmas Story

  • The Dukes of Hazzard digital watch is worn by a student in a classroom scenario.
  • The voice of the kid receiving the spanking on the other end of the phone is not R.D. Robb, the Schwartz actor when Ralphie blurts out "Schwartz" and his mother phones Mrs. Schwartz. If you listen closely, you'll see that it's the voice of Scott Schwartz, the Flick actor.
  • As the camera pans right to left as the students rush to their seats in the classroom after putting the fake teeth in their mouths, the shadow of a boom mic can be seen on the wall.
  • The narrator indicated that Schwartz was being chastised from three blocks away after Ralphie was sent to bed for saying the F word. However, we learn at the start of the film that Schwartz lived two homes down from Ralphie.
  • The lamp has no electrical cord when the father initially takes it out of the box, but he plugs it into the wall seconds later.
  • A crew member's foot abruptly vanishes from the camera in the next room just as Ralphie's father crosses the kitchen and is about to open the basement door in the first scene, with Ralphie's father going down to the basement to face the furnace.
  • The staff at a Chinese restaurant had a hard time pronouncing the "L" sound in Christmas tunes, which is hilarious. Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) speakers, on the other hand, have little issue with "L" sounds. The stereotype is mainly about Japanese speakers, and it is somewhat correct because the Japanese language has no "L" sound, and when spoken by a native Japanese speaker, it often sounds like an "R."
  • Ralphie's kitchen wall clock has no power cord. In 1940, there were no battery-powered wall clocks, so clocks were plugged in and installed in a recessed power socket.
  • The Wizard of Oz characters pass by before Ralphie and Randy stand in line to see Santa at Higbee's Department Store, and the witch tries to chat with Ralphie, who refuses to contact her since he's busy 'thinking.' In this clip, look at Randy's expression when he breaks character for a second and grins at a fearful little girl who is off-camera. During rehearsal, she was terrified of the witch and was never able to cope with her presence.
