Gremlins is an American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante and based on a screenplay by Chris Columbus. It was released in 1984. It stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel supplying the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character, and is based on mythological mischievous creatures that cause malfunctions—"gremlins"—in the British Royal Air Force dating back to World War II. The plot revolves around a young guy who acquires a strange creature as a pet, which eventually gives birth to other creatures that transform into small, vicious, and aggressive monsters that wreak havoc on a whole town on Christmas Eve.

The film, which was the subject of extensive marketing campaigns, is a black comedy set against a Christmas backdrop. Michael Finnell produced the picture, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer.

Warner Bros. released Gremlins in theaters on June 8, 1984, to critical and economic acclaim. However, it received a lot of backlash for some of its more brutal scenes. In response to this and other complaints about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg proposed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) change its rating system, which it did within two months of the film's premiere, resulting in the creation of a new PG-13 rating. Gremlins 2: The New Batch, a sequel, uses a more satirical tone and parodies Hollywood sequels, while Gremlins 3, a third feature, is currently in development.

Storyline: Gremlins

Randall Peltzer, a failing entrepreneur, goes to a Chinatown antique store in the hopes of finding something for his son Billy for Christmas. Randall meets a little, fuzzy creature known as a mogwai (Cantonese: "devil") in the store. Mr. Wing, the creature's owner, refuses to sell it to Randall. His grandson, on the other hand, discreetly sells the mogwai to Randall, instructing him to follow three key rules: never expose the mogwai to light, especially sunshine, as this will kill it; never allow it to come into contact with water; and, most importantly, never feed it after midnight. Randall returns to Kingston Falls and presents Billy with the mogwai as a pet.

Billy works at the local bank, where he is afraid that Mrs. Deagle, the old mistress, may put his dog Barney down. Randall gives the mogwai the name "Gizmo," explains the three rules he was given, and Billy treats him kindly. When Billy's young friend Pete splashes water on Gizmo, five additional mogwai sprout from his back, a more troublesome species commanded by Stripe, who is named after the tuft of fur on his head. Mr. Hanson, Billy's former scientific teacher, sees one of the mogwai and creates another mogwai on which Hanson conducts experiments. Stripe and his buddy Mogwai use the power connection to his bedside clock to deceive Billy into feeding them after midnight.

They, like Hanson's Mogwai, build cocoons. The cocoons hatch shortly after, revealing themselves to be mischievous reptile monsters known as 'gremlins,' who torture Gizmo and assault Billy's mother, Lynn, while Hanson is slain by his gremlin. Except for Stripe, who flees to a local YMCA, Lynn and Billy are successful in killing the gremlins. Stripe manages to escape Billy's pursuit by jumping into a swimming pool, releasing an army of gremlins that cause havoc in Kingston Falls. The gremlins' rampage injures or kills a large number of humans, including Mrs. Deagle.

While Billy is rescuing his girlfriend, Kate Beringer, they take refuge in the now-abandoned bank, where Kate reveals to Billy and Gizmo why she despises Christmas: when she was nine years old, her father went missing on Christmas Eve and did not return on Christmas Day; several days later, he was discovered dead in their chimney while dressed as Santa Claus. He had intended to surprise Kate and her mother, but while going down the chimney, he had stumbled and broken his neck. Kate admits that this is how she discovered the truth about Santa Claus, even though she is still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the incident.

The town has fallen silent, and the gremlins are viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the local theater, as Billy and Kate discover. Save for Stripe, who left the theater to get more sweets at a Montgomery Ward store across the street. They set off an explosion, killing all the gremlins except Stripe. As morning approaches, Billy pursues Stripe into the store, where the latter tries to create additional gremlins by using a water fountain. Stripe is killed when Gizmo opens a skylight, exposing him to sunlight. Mr. Wing arrives in the aftermath of the rampage to return Gizmo.

He chastises the Peltzer's for their irresponsibility, claiming that Western culture is unprepared to handle the duty of caring for a mogwai, but suggests that Billy may one day be able to properly care for Gizmo. Gizmo, who has grown connected to Billy, agrees and bids him farewell shortly before Mr. Wing departs with him.

Some trifles: Gremlins

When Randall is on the phone, Steven Spielberg plays the man in the electric wheelchair at the science convention.

Stripe's attack on Billy with a chainsaw in the department store was not in the script. Director Joe Dante and Zach Galligan incorporated it as a nod to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

Kingston Falls was shot on the same set as Back to the Future II (1985). The Universal Studios backlot was used for both films.

Stripe and Gizmo were once the same people. When executive producer Steven Spielberg requested that one of the Gremlins be a good guy with who the viewer could sympathize, things changed. This decision, according to director Joe Dante, is the reason why the picture is remembered warmly.

The Santa speech was divisive, and studio officials insisted on its removal because they thought it was too vague as to whether it was meant to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante, on the other hand, was adamant about keeping the sequence because he felt it mirrored the movie as a whole, which featured a mix of horror and comedy. Despite his creative control, executive producer Steven Spielberg did not enjoy the sequence, but he saw this film as Dante's idea and let him keep it in.

"Mogwai" means "devil," "demon," or "gremlin" in Cantonese. "Mogul" is the Mandarin pronunciation.

When director Joe Dante and executive producer Steven Spielberg saw the initial edit, one of the studio notes to them was that there were too many gremlins. Spielberg proposed removing them entirely and renaming the film "People."

In an interview, Zach Galligan explained that because the film was made before CGI, all of the Gremlins were animatronics that cost between $30 and $40,000. When everyone left the parking lot for the day, security would have them open their trunks to make sure their automobiles weren't stolen.

Mistakes: Gremlins

  • Mr. Hanson's mouth does not move in time with the words he is saying when he summons the gremlin from beneath the desk.
  • The movie projector is still running as Mr. Hanson searches for the transformed gremlin after the class has left, and it has reached the end of the reel. The film is fluttering as expected, but it is on the feed reel rather than the take-up reel at the back, as it should be when a film is finished. Not to mention that the feed reel is not driven, just the take-up reel is. (As the film is removed from the feed reel, it simply spins.)
  • All of the deciduous trees still have left on them, even though the film is set in late December in a northern state. The most prominent example is when Billy is attempting to start his car in front of his house in the opening scene.
  • After several attempts to start a Volkswagen Beetle, it does not produce steam since air-cooled VWs do not have radiators.
  • Blood rushes into the syringe behind the plunger as Mr. Hanson puts the needle into the mogwais paw before the plunger is pushed to remove the blood.
  • Blood rushes into the syringe behind the plunger as Mr. Hanson Mogwai is unable to eat after midnight, and it is unknown when they will be able to eat again (some find it safe to assume they can eat at some point around sunrise). It puts the needle into the mogwais paw before the plunger is pushed to remove the blood.
  • Guns, tools, and utensils used by gremlins are too small to be regular (human) sizes, and appear to be manufactured exclusively for gremlins.
