The Empire Strikes Back is a 1980 American epic space opera film directed by Irvin Kershner and written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, based on a screenplay by George Lucas. It is the sequel to Star Wars (1977) and the fifth episode of the "Skywalker saga." It is the second film of the original Star Wars trilogy to be filmed, and it is the sequel to Star Wars (1977). The plot picks up three years after the events of the first film, as the Galactic Empire hunts for the Rebel Alliance scattered across the galaxy. While Darth Vader pursues Luke Skywalker's friends—Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca—Luke studies the Force with Jedi Master Yoda to prepare for his imminent battle with Vader.
Lucasfilm is in charge of the film's production. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and Frank Oz are among the ensemble cast members. After the success of Star Wars, Lucas engaged Brackett to write the sequel; after she died in 1978, he sketched the entire Star Wars trilogy and wrote the first draft himself before recruiting Kasdan. Due to his duties at Industrial Light & Magic and arranging the financing, Lucas decided not to direct and instead delegated the task to Kershner, a former professor. The Empire Strikes Back, which was shot from March to September 1979, had a tough production due to actor injuries, the death of writer Leigh Brackett, a set fire, and fines from the Writers and Directors Guilds of America. The film's initial budget was $18 million, but by the time it was finished, it had inflated to $33 million, making it one of the most costly films ever created at the time.
The Empire Strikes Back premiered on May 17, 1980, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and was released on May 21, 1980, in the United States. With $440 million in box office receipts, the film became the highest-grossing picture of 1980. Despite receiving mixed critical reviews at the time of its release, it is today widely regarded as the best picture in the Star Wars series and one of the greatest films ever created. From its initial run and subsequent re-releases, the picture has made over $550 million worldwide. It is the second-highest-grossing sequel of all time and the thirteenth-highest-grossing picture of all time in North America when adjusted for inflation. [5] The Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2010 as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important."
The Empire Strikes Back influenced filmmaking and popular culture and is recognized as a rare example of a sequel that outperforms the original. The conclusion, in which Vader reveals to Luke that he is his father, is widely regarded as one of cinema's greatest plot surprises.

Storyline: Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Three years after the Death Star is destroyed, the Imperial fleet, led by Darth Vader, sends out probe droids around the galaxy to find Princess Leia and the Rebel Alliance. The base on the ice planet Hoth was discovered by one of these probes. Luke Skywalker is kidnapped by a wampa while inspecting the probe, but he uses the Force and his lightsaber to escape. As Luke begins to succumb to hypothermia, the Force spirit of Luke's master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, directs him to the swamp planet of Dagobah, where he will learn under Jedi Master Yoda. Han Solo looks for and finds Luke, then protects him from the elements until they are rescued the next morning. When the Empire learns of the Rebels' position, it launches a massive attack employing AT-AT walkers to take the base, forcing the Rebels to flee. Han and Leia escape on the Millennium Falcon with C-3PO and Chewbacca, but the ship's hyperdrive fails. They take refuge in an asteroid field, where the tensions cause Han and Leia to grow closer. To find the Falcon, Vader summons multiple bounty hunters, including Boba Fett.
In the meantime, Luke pilots his X-wing fighter to Dagobah, where he crashes. After speaking with Obi-soul, Wan, encounters Yoda, a small creature who grudgingly accepts Luke as his Jedi trainee. Han's gang heads to the floating Cloud City on the planet Bespin, which is governed by his old buddy Lando Calrissian, after eluding the Imperial fleet. Vader forces Lando to hand over the group to the Empire when Fett tracks them down to the city. Vader employs the group to entice Luke into joining the dark side of the Force to recruit him. Luke has a vision of Han and Leia in misery and, despite Obi-Wan and Yoda's protests, foregoes his training to save them.
Vader plans to put Luke in suspended animation by encasing him in carbonite, and he plans to test the method on Han. He lives and is handed over to Fett, who plans on collecting his reward from Jabba the Hutt. Lando frees Leia and Chewbacca, but it's too late to prevent Fett from fleeing. The party battles their way back to the Falcon before fleeing the city. In a lightsaber duel over the city's central air shaft, Luke confronts Vader. Luke's hand is severed by Vader, who tempts him to help him defeat the Emperor. Luke has a vision of Han and Leia in misery and, despite Obi-Wan and Yoda's protests, foregoes his training to save them.
Luke refuses, assuming Vader is the assassin who killed his father, causing Vader to reveal that he is Luke's father. Desperate, Luke enters the air shaft and is thrown beneath the floating city, grabbing an antenna. He communicates with Leia through the Force, and the Falcon returns to save him. TIE fighters follow the party, and they are almost cornered by Vader aboard his Star Destroyer, until R2-D2 repairs the Falcon's hyperdrive, allowing them to flee. Luke's hand is replaced with a robotic prosthesis aboard the Rebel fleet. As Lando and Chewbacca depart on the Falcon to find Han, he, Leia, C-3PO, and R2-D2 watch.

Some trifles: Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
David Prowse had no idea that Darth Vader was Luke's father until he saw this film, and he was furious with George Lucas afterward, claiming that his physical acting would have been drastically different if he'd known the genuine line.
The novelization of the film was released a month before the film, and not even the early editions attempted to hide the fact that Darth Vader was Luke's father.
The telepathic contact between Luke and Leia at the close of the film (when Luke asks for his rescue from Cloud City) is the only sign that Luke and Leia have a special bond, which is revealed in Star Wars: Episode VI-Return of the Jedi (1983).
A prop head was first utilized for the scene in the cave where Darth Vader's mask cracks open to expose Luke's face, but the outcome proved unsatisfactory. Mark Hamill's head was shoved through a hole under the mask in a re-shoot of the scene. The scene was challenging for Hamill to shoot since he had to keep his eyes wide and not blink as smoke was blown through the mask.
Darth Vader is the main antagonist in this film, which is probably the only one in the original trilogy. Darth Vader serves as Grand Moff Tarkin's and Emperor Palpatine's henchmen in Star Wars: Episode IV-A New Hope (1977) and Star Wars: Episode VI-Return of the Jedi (1983), but in this film, he is free to do whatever he wants, including attacking Hoth, capturing the Millennium Falcon, torturing Han Solo, and ordering him to freeze Solo in carbonite.
Many scenes were omitted from the final cut of the film. For example, Han and Leia's argument is longer, while Wampa's rampage through the base is lengthier. These are available on YouTube.
The film has three hints that Luke and Leia are siblings. On Hoth, Leia appears to be lost in thought as the doors of the hidden rebel base close, implying she is thinking of Luke. Yoda tells Kenobi there is "another" after the latter claims Luke Skywalker is their last hope, which turns out to be Leia as revealed in ROTJ, and Leia sensing Luke's presence, presumably through the Force, in Bespin. In ROTJ, Leia even tells Luke that she has always known she was his sister.
Mistakes: Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Before Luke and R2-D2 discover Yoda (or Yoda finds them) on Dagobah, Luke plugs something into R2 and says, "Now all I have to do is find this Yoda-if he even exists." Luke's mouth does not move when he says, "If he even exists." The DVD attempted to correct this by adding a small amount of texture to Luke's mouth every few half seconds, but it is hardly apparent; they couldn't fix it without spoiling the scene.
- Luke's gunner on the Snowspeeder, according to the credits, is named Dak. All other spin-off material (games, books, etc.) spells the name Dack, which appears to be the official spelling presently. This is not corrected in later versions of the film (special editions, DVD releases, etc.).
- Han is handcuffed as he is going to be frozen; two Ugnaughts appear to fidget with the cuffs, but Han is still cuffed in the shot of him being dropped into the freezing chamber. His hands are not cuffed when he resurfaces frozen, and they appear to have "grasped" at the time he was frozen.
- When Luke destroys the AT-AT with a thermal detonator, a stick can be seen poking through the ground from under the walker's left back leg, tipping it over.
- All of the Star Wars spacecraft defy the rules of physics when it comes to flying. They travel through space like airplanes, which have enough resistance to turn in sweeping, arcing banks. This is impossible in space since there is no air to provide resistance to these turns.
- Officer Bell (Milton Johns) enters the Carbonite Freezing Scene and announces, "Lord Vader, ship approaching X-Wing Class," in his British accent, before leaving. He reappears near the end of the scene and announces, "Skywalker has just landed, My Lord," with a heavily dubbed American accent.
- The colors of the many buttons on Darth Vader's breast plate change throughout the films. However, given the amount of time that passes between movies, it's not unreasonable to assume that he has his life support systems refurbished and modified on a regular basis.
- Captain Needa is killed by Vader for losing the Millenium Falcon. When two Imperial soldiers pick up his body to transport it, the corpse rises to its feet.
- When Vader uses his lightsaber to amputate Luke's hand, you can see that his blade actually misses Luke's hand.
