Airplane! (also known as Flying High!) is a 1980 American parody film produced by Jon Davison and written and directed by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams. Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson star alongside Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty. The film is a spoof of catastrophe movies, including the 1957 Paramount picture Zero Hour!, from which it steals the narrative and primary characters, as well as numerous elements from Airport 1975 and subsequent Airport films. Surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor, are staples of Airplane!.
Airplane! was a critical and commercial triumph for Paramount Pictures, generating $171 million worldwide on a $3.5 million budget. Its creators won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, respectively.

Storyline: Airplane!
Ted Striker, a damaged war veteran turned cab driver, is an ex-fighter pilot. The Striker has been unable to retain respectable work due to his neurotic fear of flying and subsequent "drinking issue" (he sprays liquid everywhere besides his mouth). Elaine Dickinson, his wartime girlfriend and now a flight attendant, abandons him before boarding her assigned trip from Los Angeles to Chicago. Striker abandons his taxi and purchases a ticket for the same trip in an attempt to reclaim her. Dickinson, though, continues to reject him once he is on board. The entire flight crew and some passengers become unwell after the in-flight meal is given. Dr. Rumack, a passenger, realizes that the fish provided during meal time has given him a food illness. With the flight crew incapacitated, Dickinson seeks assistance from Chicago control tower supervisor Steve McCroskey, who instructs him to engage the jet's autopilot, a huge inflatable dummy pilot dubbed "Otto," which will bring them to Chicago but will be unable to land the plane. Striker is persuaded to seize the controls by Dickinson and Rumack. When McCroskey discovers that Striker is flying, he contacts Striker's previous commanding officer, Rex Kramer, who is now a commercial pilot, to assist him with the landing procedures. When Kramer begins giving commands, Striker grows nervous, and he briefly breaks down amid fresh combat flashbacks. Striker's confidence is boosted by Dickinson and Rumack, and he regains control of the ship.
The weather worsens as the plane approaches Chicago, hindering the landing. The Striker is able to land the plane safely, despite the landing gear shearing off, with the help of Dickinson as co-pilot and Kramer's guidance from the tower. The passengers suffered only minor injuries. Rescue cars arrive to assist with the plane's unloading. Dickinson hugs and kisses Striker, rekindling their relationship after being impressed by his bravery. As "Otto" takes charge of the plane, inflates a female buddy, and takes off, the two watch.

Some trifles: Airplane!
- Rex Kramer pushes Jim Abrahams aside as the second religious zealot who arrives at the Chicago Airport terminal.
- [Funny Ending Credits] Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker The closing credits include credits that are amusing (such as "Guy in Charge of Lots of Things" etc).
- The creators used the same voice artists who had produced the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport for the debate between broadcasters about the white and red zones at the airport. The white zone is for passenger loading and unloading only at the real airport, and there is no halting in the red zone (except for transit buses). In real life, they were married to each other.
- Because of their reputation for playing no-nonsense characters, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker cast actors like Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Leslie Nielsen. These actors had never done comedy before, so their "straight-arrow" characters and line delivery added to the poignancy and humor of the film's satire. Bridges were hesitant to accept his role in the film at first, but his sons pushed him to do so.
- Leslie Nielsen's first humorous role was as a doctor. He later stated that he was overjoyed to receive the offer, as he had been worried that he was getting too old for anything other than "elderly grandfather" roles. The studio originally wanted Dom DeLuise to play the doctor, but Jerry Zucker, David Zucker, and Jim Abrahams won out. It launched Nielsen's career in crazy comedies, particularly those produced by Zucker Abrahams Zucker (ZAZ).
- The producers, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, sold the film to Paramount as "National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) on a plane," which was far from the truth, but it was the only way they could persuade studio executives that it was a crazy comedy.
- Producer Jon Davison mentions (in the DVD extras) that after the film, he received numerous letters from various pilots telling him that they had come very close to re-enacting the famous scene of the Boeing 747 crashing through the large windows inside the terminal, with some pilots admitting that they had even touched the glass with the noses of their planes.
Mistakes: Airplane!
- You can hear the nun smacking the screaming wife in the cabin, but the nun barely brushes the woman's face.
- Ted claims he failed to check the oil pressure after they lost the number 4 engine. Kramer says Ted failed to check the oil temperature in the next scene.
- Joey (the little child) can be seen in the distant background carrying a brown bag in the shot with the Hari Krishnas during the opening montage when several major characters are introduced. We observe him coming out of a car with his parents and bags a few seconds later.
- During one segment of Ted's dance to "Stayin 'Alive," strings can be seen supporting him as he leans backward at an impossible angle to stand at naturally.
- Although the Peace Corps sequence takes place in Africa, the elephant is an Indian elephant, as seen by its short ears.
- The key plot point of this film is that the entire cockpit crew becomes disabled due to food sickness as a result of them all eating the fish offered as one of the in-flight meal options. However, at the time, FAA regulations prevented both pilots from having the same meal to avoid complications like this. On domestic flights, but not international flights, the rule has been altered to allow for same-meal selections. The steak should have been ordered by one of the pilots.
- "Trans American" is the name of the imaginary airline in the film. However, "Trans WORLD Airlines" is written above the ticketing desk in the airport (the real-life TWA).
- Even though the plane has jet engines, the engine noise heard inside the cabin is that of a piston-engined propeller plane throughout the film. This engine noise is from the film Zero Hour! and has been a running joke for a long time: The film Airplane! is a parody of disaster movies like Zero Hour and Airport.
- Over receives a call at the airport about the "transplantation girl" with the white/red/black phone. Nancy Hansen, the script supervisor, can be heard chuckling in the background after he picks up the wrong phone.
