Charlie Chaplin's silent comedy-drama The Kid, written, produced, directed, and starring Jackie Coogan as his foundling infant, adoptive son, and sidekick, was released in 1921. This was Chaplin's first full-length picture as a director (he had previously appeared as a co-star in Tillie's Punctured Romance, released in 1914). It was a big hit, and behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, it was the second-highest-grossing film in 1921. The Kid was chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2011 as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important."

Storyline: The Kid

An unwed mother abandons her child with great sadness, placing him in a luxury car with a handwritten note that reads, "Please love and care for this orphan child." The car is stolen by two robbers, who abandon the infant in an alley, where he is discovered by The Tramp. He finds the note after several efforts to pass the youngster off to random passers-by, and his heart melts. He brings the boy home, calls him John, and rearranges his furniture to accommodate him. Meanwhile, the mother changes her mind and returns for her child; however, she collapses when she discovers that the car has been stolen.

Five years have passed. The Kid and the Tramp share a small room and have little money but a lot of affection. They make a living through a small scam in which the kid throws stones at windows for the tramp, who works as a glazier, to be paid to fix them. Meanwhile, the mother has amassed a fortune as an actress and donates to charity by providing gifts to underprivileged children. The mother and the kid unintentionally cross paths as she does so.

The Kid subsequently gets into a fight with another local boy, drawing a crowd of spectators to the scene. As a result of the kid's victory, the other boy's elder brother becomes enraged and attacks the Tramp. After the mother leaves, the fight resumes, and the Tramp continues to hit the "Big Brother" over the head with a brick between swings until he totters away.

Following that, the mother urges the tramp to contact a doctor if the kid becomes ill. The doctor determines that the tramp is not the kid's biological father and informs the authorities. Two men arrive to take the boy to an orphanage, but the Tramp and the boy remain side by side after a skirmish and a chase. When the mother returns to see how the youngster is doing, the doctor shows her the note (which he had taken from the tramp), which she recognizes as the one she left with her baby years ago.

The Tramp and the boy spend the night at a flophouse as fugitives. While the tramp is sleeping, the kid's owner learns of a $1,000 prize given by the authorities and brings him to the police station. The Tramp searches desperately for the missing boy as the grieving mother is reunited with her long-lost child. He returns to their meager lodgings' threshold, where he falls asleep, visiting a "Dreamland" where his neighbors have transformed into angels and devils. He is roused by a police officer and driven to a mansion. The mother and the kid open the door, and the tramp welcomes him in by jumping into his arms.

Some trifles from The Kid

Sir Charles Chaplin directed his first feature-length film.

Sir Charles Chaplin, a determined perfectionist, took 5 1/2 months to shoot the film, an enormous length of time for a cinema production in 1921.

Sir Charles Chaplin and Jackie Coogan had an off-screen connection that was equally as powerful as their on-screen chemistry. During the first several weeks of production, Chaplin took Jackie to amusement parks, pony rides, and other fun activities every Sunday. Chaplin's friendship with Coogan has been understood by some as an attempt by Chaplin to recover from his terrible upbringing, while others have characterized Chaplin's care of the youngster as recasting Coogan into the child he had recently lost.

The production company attempted to defraud Sir Charles Chaplin by paying him the same amount for a six-reel picture as they would for a two-reel film, which was around $500,000. Chaplin took the unfinished film out of state until the studio agreed to pay him the $1.5 million he was owed, plus half of the rental income, as well as the reversion of the film to him after five years on the rental market.

Sir Charles Chaplin and Jackie Coogan last met in 1972, during Chaplin's brief visit to the United States to accept an Honorary Academy Award.

The "Coogan Bill" was passed to ensure that child performers' income would never be squandered by their parents or guardians again after Jackie Coogan's mother and stepfather spent all of the youngster's money before he reached maturity.

The youth of Sir Charles Chaplin's London is reflected in the depiction of poverty and the harshness of welfare workers. As a result, it's his most autobiographical film to date.

After seeing Jackie Coogan in a vaudeville performance with his father, Jack Coogan Sr., Sir Charles Chaplin wanted to produce a film about him. The elder Coogan essentially put his career on hold to help Jackie during the filming process. In turn, Chaplin praised Jack Srrole's work in instructing the youngster, as well as assuaging his performer's ego, by giving him $125 per week, about double the $75 Jackie was earning as a costar. As a bum who picks the Tramp's pocket, as the Devil in the Heaven sequence, and as a party guest, Jack Sr. appeared in various scenes in the film.

Jackie Coogan, who portrays the endearing "Kid," went on to play the bizarre "Uncle Fester" in the 1960s sitcom The Addams Family (1964).

Sir Charles Chaplin's composition uses a tune from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony as its main theme.

Mistakes on The Kid

  • The hand holding the message in the close-up is not wearing white gloves when the doctor hands it to the woman.
  • When the policeman pursues both the Tramp and the Kid, the Kid loses his cap, which falls to the ground in his yard before he enters his house. Even yet, when he's spotted inside, he's wearing his cap again.
  • Raymond Lee's character, the Bully's brother, has blatantly false muscles. Because this is a 1920s film, they didn't have advanced resources, but they should have selected a very strong performer.)
  • The scenario concludes on the rooftop with the Tramp and one of the welfare workers fighting on the back of the workers' pickup truck after the Tramp follows the two welfare workers who have kidnapped and mistreated John. The Tramp makes a "nonsensical" wave goodbye as he and John ride off to temporary safety after kicking the second welfare man off the back of the pickup. In reality, cameraman Roland Totheroh is waving "CUT" to Charles Chaplin (also the director).
