The Power of the Dog (2021)

The Power of the Dog is a psychological drama Western film directed by Jane Campion and based on Thomas Savage's 1967 novel of the same name. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee feature in the film. The film is an international co-production between New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, and was shot primarily in rural Otago, New Zealand. Love, sadness, resentment, jealousy, and sexuality are among the themes explored in the film.

On September 2, 2021, Campion received the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, when The Power of the Dog had its world debut. The film had a limited theatrical release in Australia and New Zealand on November 11, 2021, and in the United Kingdom and the United States on November 17, 2021. On December 1, 2021, it was made available to stream worldwide on Netflix.

Critics complimented Campion's direction and script, as well as the photography, soundtrack, and acting performances of the cast (particularly Cumberbatch, Dunst, and Smit-McPhee). The American Film Institute rated it as one of the finest films of 2021. It also garnered ten nominations at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards, including Best Picture. It was also nominated for seven Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for Smit-McPhee, and Best Director for Campion.

Storyline: The Power of the Dog (2021)

During a cattle drive in Montana in 1925, rich ranch-owning brothers Phil and George Burbank met widow and inn owner Rose Gordon. Rose's son Peter is mocked for his lisp and sissy demeanor by the volatile Phil, who was heavily inspired by his late mentor "Bronco" Henry.

George and Rose married soon after. While Rose moves into the Burbank ranch house, she uses George's money to send her son to college to study medicine and surgery. Phil dislikes her because he believes she married George for his money. His gruff demeanor and insulting demeanor irritate her. Rose invites his parents and the governor to a dinner party so they can meet Rose and hear her play their new piano. Rose is humiliated further when Phil belittles her when she is unable to play more than a few notes of the "Radetzky March." She begins to drink alcohol, which she had previously avoided.

Rose has become an alcoholic by the time Peter arrives at the ranch for the summer break. Peter isolates himself in his room, dissecting animals and studying diseases after Phil and his men ridicule him. Phil masturbates with Bronco Henry's handkerchief in an isolated clearing. When Peter enters the clearing, he discovers a stockpile of naked men's-themed magazines bearing Bronco Henry's name. Phil catches him bathing in a pond with the handkerchief around his neck, and he pursues him away.

To further humiliate Rose, Phil continues to treat Peter with civility, offering to plait a rawhide lasso for him and teach him how to ride a horse. One day, Peter goes out on his own and discovers a dead cow, likely due to anthrax infection. He dons gloves and begins chopping off sections of the cow's hide. Peter and Phil corner and kill a rabbit on a fence, and Phil sustains an open wound on his hand. After that, Peter tells Phil about finding his drunken father's body after he had hanged himself and cut him down.

Rose's alcoholism grows as she sees how much time her son spends with Phil. Rose firmly offers the hides she doesn't need to local Native American traders, who thank her with a pair of gloves after learning about Phil's policy of burning the hides he doesn't need for himself. She collapses as a result of her heavy drinking, and George tends to her.

Phil is frustrated that he doesn't have enough hides to finish Peter's lasso, so he lashes out at Rose before George intervenes. Peter soothes him by offering him the hide he removed from the deceased cattle, but he makes no mention of the ill animal. Phil is moved and promises Peter that their relationship will improve dramatically from now on. They spend the night in the barn, completing the rope, healing Phil's wound, and softening the hide with water.

Phil tells Peter about how Bronco Henry saved his life by lying body-to-body in a bedroll with him during a blizzard. When Peter asks if they were naked, Phil remains silent. They then smoke a joint together. When Phil fails to show up for breakfast the next day, George discovers him unwell in bed with a badly infected cut. A delirious Phil seeks out Peter to pass over the completed lasso, but George whisks him away to the clinic before he can do so. Later, while Phil's body is being readied for burial, George is seen selecting a coffin.

The doctor tells George at the funeral that Phil most likely died of anthrax, which puzzles him because Phil was usually careful to avoid infected livestock. Peter, who had not attended the funeral, reads Psalm 22:20 from the Book of Common Prayer during the burial rite: "Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog." With gloved hands, he later tucks his finished lasso under his bed. He comes to a halt at a window as he walks along the corridor, seeing George and a sober Rose coming home and embracing. He smiles as he turns away.

Some trifles from The Power of the Dog (2021)

Off-screen, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst are married and have two sons together.

During filming, Kirsten Dunst and Benedict Cumberbatch were so absorbed in their roles that they did not talk to each other.

Kirsten Dunst put in a lot of effort to study the piano piece she plays onscreen. She had mastered two musical compositions at the time, but one of them was deleted from the release print, much to her dismay.

Benedict Cumberbatch didn't wash for over two weeks at the start of the filming to get into character as Phil Burbank. He began chain-smoking as well. He felt unwell after each take as he smoked the rolled-up cigarettes, even though he had smoked in real life for years. He acquired nicotine poisoning three times as a result of his chain-smoking.

Jane Campion has long admired Kirsten Dunst and had attempted to collaborate with her on a previous project. According to Dunst, Campion wrote Dunst a letter in 2001, which she kept in her possession.

Various people had owned the rights to the book throughout the years, but for various reasons, had never been able to get the project off the ground. Paul Newman was one of the interested parties at one point.

The film is set in 1920s Montana and was shot on location in New Zealand, where director Jane Campion was born.

Due to French theatrical release laws, the film was invited to screen in an out-of-competition slot at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Despite being a solely streaming platform, Netflix declined to show the film because it competed, and it was withheld. Instead, the film will be shown in a competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2021.

Rose was originally cast like Elisabeth Moss, in what would have been her third collaboration with Jane Campion after the two separate Top of the Lake (2013) miniseries adaptations. Due to scheduling difficulties with Taika Waititi's film Next Goal Wins (2022), she was forced to drop out, and Kirsten Dunst was cast in her place.

Jane Campion collaborated closely with production designer Grant Major, who was in charge of the ranch house and cow barn's construction and appearance, which had to be "aged" to correctly depict structures from the 1920s. Since An Angel at My Table, this was Campion and Major's second collaboration (1990).

Mistakes on The Power of the Dog (2021)

Peter expels some of his rages by hula-hooping. The current hula hoop, on the other hand, was invented in 1958. Native Americans employ hoops in traditional dances, although they are not the same as the modern hula hoop.
After Phil mocks the paper flowers, Rose angrily removes them from the dinner table, but the flowers are back in front of Phil in the next frame.
Peter walks towards a tree where nesting birds are raising chicks about 50 minutes into the film, as ranchmen call him names. The Australian Magpies, which are not present in Montana, are the birds in question.
To get to the secret lake and porn stash, Peter and Phil had to crawl through a wood tunnel. How on earth is Phil's saddled-up horse grazing by the lake when Peter spots Phil swimming in the lake? That horse couldn't possibly have squeezed through the tunnel.
The first shot through the windows reveals crystal clear glass. It would have been wavy 100 years ago.
