Storyline: Stand by Me
Gordie Lachance, a writer, is reading a newspaper article about a man who was attacked in a restaurant. Gordie describes a childhood episode in which he, his best friend, Chris Chambers, and two other pals, Teddy Duchamp and Vern Tessio, went on a search for a missing boy in Castle Rock, Oregon, over Labor Day weekend in September 1959.Gordie's parents are too preoccupied with grieving over their older brother Denny to pay much attention to Gordie, who is twelve years old. Vern overhears his older brother Billy chatting with his friend Charlie about finding the body of the missing boy, Ray Brower, outside of town, while digging for money he hid beneath his parents' porch. Billy is hesitant to disclose the body because it may draw attention to the fact that he and Charlie were recently caught stealing a car. When Vern informs Gordie, Chris, and Teddy, the four lads resolve to search for the body in the hopes of becoming local heroes. Chris and Gordie run into local hoodlum "Ace" Merrill and Chris's older brother, "Eyeball" Chambers after Chris steals his father's pistol. Ace holds a lighted cigarette to Chris's face and snatches Gordie's Yankees cap, which Denny had given him as a gift.
The four boys set out on their journey. They are caught trespassing by owner Milo Pressman and his dog, Chopper, after stopping at a junkyard for water. Milo calls Teddy's mentally ill father a "loony" and taunts him about it as they flee over a fence. Teddy, outraged, tries to attack Milo, but the other guys stop him. The four continue their journey, and despite his father's displeasure, Chris urges Gordie to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. The youngsters are nearly murdered by an oncoming train as they cross a railroad bridge. Vern, who is the furthest behind, has the chance to leap over, but panic sets in until Gordie saves him.
Gordie narrates the story of David "Lard-Ass" Hogan, an obese boy who is often bullied, later that evening. To exact vengeance, Lard-Ass enters a pie-eating contest and purposefully throws up, causing mass vomiting among the contestants and crowd (which Gordie dubs a "barf-o-rama"). Chris tells Gordie that he despises being affiliated with his family's reputation that night. He admits to stealing milk money at school but tells Gordie that he confessed later and returned the money to a teacher. Chris was suspended despite this, and the teacher discreetly spent the money rather than reporting it to her superiors. Chris falls and sobs, devastated by the teacher's dishonesty.
The guys swim across a pond the next day and realize it is infested with leeches. After discovering a leech in his underwear, Gordie passes out. Ray Brower's body is discovered after more hiking by the lads. Gordie is shaken by the news, and he begs Chris why his brother Denny had to die, claiming his father despises him. Chris disagrees, claiming that Gordie's father simply isn't familiar with him.
Ace and his gang show up there, declare that the body is theirs, and threaten to beat the four youngsters if they interfere. Ace threatens Chris with a switchblade after he insults him and refuses to back down. Gordie takes the gun and fires a single shot into the air before training it on Ace. Gordie refuses to give the firearm to Ace, calling him a "cheap dime-store hood." Ace asks Gordie if he intends to shoot the entire group, to which Gordie says, "No, Ace. "Only you." Ace and his gang flee, swearing vengeance. The four lads agree that it would be wrong for anyone to claim credit for finding the body, so they make an anonymous phone call to the authorities. They retrace their steps back to Castle Rock and go their separate ways.
In the present, adult Gordie is writing a memoir of the adventure, and he claims that Teddy and Vern drifted away from him and Chris shortly after they started junior high school. Chris later went to college and became a lawyer, Gordie reveals. He was stabbed to death while attempting to break up a quarrel in a restaurant. Gordie types that, despite not seeing Chris in almost a decade, he will always miss him.
Gordie's narrative comes to a close with the following words: "Later in life, I never had any friends like the ones I had when I was twelve. Does anyone know who Jesus is?" He thinks about it for a moment before going outside to play with his son and his son's friend.

Some trifles: Stand by Me
Wil Wheaton and Jerry O'Connell didn't act afraid enough when filming the scene where Gordie and Vern are about to be plowed over by a train. Director Rob Reiner became enraged and yelled at them until they started crying, at which point they were able to film the sequence.
The four boys were not allowed to see Ray Brower (Kent W. Luttrell) until he was revealed on camera. This tactic was meant to disturb them and get the best reaction possible.
The sequence in which Vern (Jerry O'Connell) can't remember the "secret knock" to the clubhouse was thought up by Wheaton, River Phoenix, and Corey Feldman on the day it was shot as another attempt to make Vern look more miserable, according to Wil Wheaton on the DVD documentary.
After director Rob Reiner gave Stephen King a screening of the film, he noted that he was visibly shivering and not speaking. He walked out of the room and returned to tell Reiner that the film was the best rendition of his work he'd ever seen.
In an interview, Kiefer Sutherland stated that a Renaissance Fair was hosted in one of the filming locations, and that the cast and crew attended and purchased cookies. Unfortunately, the cookies turned out to be pot cookies, and the crew discovered Jerry O'Connell crying and high somewhere in the park two hours later.
Rob Reiner was certain that River Phoenix could outperform Chris in the campfire moment where he breaks down. He instructed him to recall a period in his life when an adult had disappointed him and utilize it in the scene, which Phoenix did. He had to be consoled by the director after he was upset and crying. The sequence that made it into the final edit is the product of Phoenix's workout.
During filming, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, and Jerry O'Connell got into a lot of trouble in the hotel where they were staying. This includes Wheaton altering video games in the lobby so they could play them for free, and Phoenix (spurred on by the other lads) unknowingly covering Kiefer Sutherland's car in mud, only to find out later when Sutherland approached a horrified and nervous Phoenix about it.
The crew wanted the boys to be "safe and secure," so they put them in a man-made pool rather than a real pond because they didn't know what would be in it. However, Corey Feldman revealed in an interview that the pool was built, submerged, and filled with water in early June, and by the time they got around to filming the sequence, it was late August. So it had been three months in the woods, and they still had no idea what was inside.
Mistakes: Stand by Me
- Chris uses the term "douchebag" in a context that did not exist until 1967 when Gordie and Chris are discussing the stolen milk money.
- Vern is heard stating "You guys are never going to believe this..." as he enters the treehouse through the trap door, while his mouth is speaking the preceding phrases "Oh, man, oh, man."
- You can see the boom mike bobbing into view and then being pulled away as Gordie walks into the store and the clerk chats to him.
- Gordie sings "I Ran All The Way Home" while looking straight at the camera in the clubhouse at the start.
- Teddy's left ear (which his father nearly burned off) is burned in the treehouse scene. However, its appearance alters throughout the film; for example, in the railroad tracks scene, it appears to be entirely normal.
- As Verne comes back onto the railway track after Teddy and Chris make up in the first train dodge sequence, you can see his wireless mike tumble down his left thigh and fall near his ankle.
- The original narrative is set in Maine, as are many of Stephen King's stories. Despite being set in Oregon, the film has various references to the original setting, such as a reference to gathering wild blueberries. Teddy is also teased by the garbage collector, who tells him that his father will be "given to Togus" (which he misspells as Tau-gas rather than Tow-guys). Togus, Maine, has a huge veteran's hospital, which would be the logical site for Teddy's father to receive treatment (in Maine).
- Vern is mentioned as burying and then losing a quart jar of pennies "before the beginning of the school year" and seeking it for the last nine months near the opening of the film. However, because the story takes place over Labor Day weekend unless Castle Rock's school year aligns with the calendar year, that description is incorrect. The story could have been set on Memorial Day, in which case the timeline would have been correct.
- Only the headline and first paragraph of the newspaper item regarding Chris' death are linked to this story; these appear to have been placed over another piece concerning land tax or something similar.
- All of the performers vomit blueberries in the "barf-o-rama" scenario, much like Lard-Ass and the other pie-eat contenders. Nobody in the audience ate any blueberries, according to the footage. However, Gordie is making up a funny scenario, and he doesn't have everything straight in his head.
- When Gordie first glances at the newspaper piece, the first paragraph is about the stabbing, but the second column belongs to a different topic.
- Gordie fires one shot into the air from his 1911.45 handguns during the last battle with Ace. He then cocks the pistol to add emphasis to his declaration that he would shoot Ace. However, because 1911 is a single-action automatic, the handgun would already be cocked after shooting the first bullet, as firing causes the slide to cycle back and forth, cocking the gun and preparing it to fire the next cartridge in the process. It's not impossible that he de-cocked the gun after shooting the first bullet, but it's exceedingly unlikely, and there's no evidence in the movie that he did so.
