Denis Villeneuve's Dune (also known as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and based on a script written by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. It's the first installment in a proposed two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel of the same name, focusing on the first half of the book. It follows Paul Atreides and his noble House Atreides as they are thrown into a conflict over the perilous desert planet Arrakis in the far future. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem are among the film's ensemble cast members.

Legendary Entertainment bought the film and television rights to Dune in 2017 after Paramount Pictures failed to make a fresh adaptation of Herbert's novel. Villeneuve expressed interest in the film shortly after, and in January 2017, he formally signed on as director. On the screenplay, he collaborated with Roth and Spaihts, dividing the 1965 novel adaptation into two parts and adding a 21st-century sensibility to Herbert's original ambitions. Similar to the two-part It from 2017, only the first portion of the script received production contracts, with the expectation that the second part would be greenlit if the first part performed well at the box office. From March to July 2019, filming took place in Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi, among other places.

On September 3, 2021, Dune opened at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. On September 15, 2021, Warner Bros. Pictures released it in 2D, 3D, and IMAX theaters around the world. On October 22, 2021, Dune was released in theaters and streamed on HBO Max at the same time. It garnered positive reviews from critics for its graphics, grandeur, and ambition, and has grossed $223.2 million worldwide against a $165 million production budget. Dune: Part Two was confirmed for a theatrical release in October 2023, just a week after its initial release.

Storyline: Dune

The Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV assigns Duke Leto of House Atreides, ruler of the ocean world Caladan, to replace House Harkonnen as fief rulers of Arrakis in 10191. Arrakis is a harsh desert planet that is home to the only supply of "spice," a precious substance that boosts human longevity and is essential for interplanetary travel. In actuality, Shaddam plans to have House Harkonnen conduct a coup with the Emperor's Sardaukar warriors to seize the planet, erasing House Atreides' influence, which threatens Shaddam's rule. Leto is wary, but sees the possibility of forming an alliance with Arrakis' native people, the Fremen, as a first step toward improving the Atreides' standing in the Landsraad.

Lady Jessica, Leto's concubine, is a member of the Bene Gesserit, an elite sisterhood with superior physical and mental abilities. Jessica was told by the Bene Gesserit to bear a daughter whose son would become the Kwisatz Haderach, but she instead bore a son, Paul, out of love for Leto. Leto's aides, Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck, and the Mentat Thufir Hawat, train Paul throughout his life, while Jessica trains Paul in Bene Gesserit disciplines. Paul tells Jessica and Duncan that he's having difficulties sleeping because of images of the future. The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam arrives in Caladan as a result of the visions and submits Paul to a lethal test to measure his impulse control, which he passes. Later, Mohiam orders Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the House patriarch, to spare Paul and Jessica during his coup, which he duplicitously agrees to.

House Atreides lands in Arrakeen, the erstwhile bastion of House Harkonnen on Arrakis, where Idaho and an advance team have been studying the area and the Fremen. Leto meets planetologist and imperial judge Dr. Liet-Kynes and negotiates with Fremen leader Stilgar. Leto, Paul, and Halleck are warned by Kynes about the perils of spice gathering, which include huge sandworms that move beneath the desert. They see a sandworm approaching an active spice harvester with a stranded crew during a trip. Before the sandworm swallows the crew, they are rescued. Paul's premonitions are exacerbated by his exposure to spice-laden air.

Following a Harkonnen agent's assassination attempt on Paul's life, Leto orders his soldiers to be on high alert. Harkonnen and Sardaukar troops are able to overrun the Atreides army after Suk Doctor Wellington Yueh disables Arrakeen's protection shields. Yueh knocks Leto out and tells him he made a deal with the Baron to deliver him in exchange for his wife, who has been kidnapped. After delivering the Duke, Yueh replaces one of Leto's teeth with a poison gas capsule and is killed. The deadly gas is released by Leto, killing members of the Baron's court as well as himself, but the Baron lives. Idaho manages to elude capture and steal an ornithopter, but Paul and Jessica are apprehended. They are taken to the desert to perish by Harkonnens, but they are defeated by the "voice." Paul and Jessica spend the night in a tent after discovering a survival kit left by Yueh; Paul has visions of a "holy war" spreading across the cosmos in his name.

To recoup the cost of the coup, the Baron gives over command of Arrakis to his brutish nephew Rabban, who is ordered to sell spice stocks and restart production. Idaho and Kyne hunt down Paul and Jessica and lead them to an abandoned research station, where they are promptly apprehended by Sardaukar. Duncan and several Fremen make selfless sacrifices to allow Jessica, Paul, and Kynes to flee the institution. When Kynes is ambushed by Sardaukar troops, she entices a sandworm to eat them all. When Paul and Jessica arrive in the deep desert, they encounter the Fremen, including Stilgar and Chani, the girl from Paul's visions. Jamis, a Fremen member, objects to their entry and is killed in a ritual duel to the death of Paul. Paul joins the Fremen against Jessica's desires to bring peace to Arrakis.

Some trifles: Dune

Baron Harkonnen refers to himself as "cousin," implying that they are related. The Reverend Mother demanded a child from Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in the expanded universe of Dune as part of the Bene Gesserit plan to beget the Kwisatz Haderach. He raped her and impregnated her with Lady Jessica, who subsequently became the mother of Paul Atreides, the Baron's grandson. In addition, the Reverend Mother infected the Baron with a sickness that resulted in his great weight following the rape. As a result, the Baron is unable to walk and must rely on floating devices.

Tómas Lemarquis, a French-Icelandic actor, appears as a Harkonnen trooper in concept art. Lemarquis suffers from alopecia Universalis, a disorder that leaves him fully hairless and is shared by all the people of Giedi Prime in this adaptation. The Baron's servants, Dora Kápolnai-Schwab and Joelle, suffer the same problem. Denis Villeneuve's previous film, Blade Runner 2049 (2017), included Lemarquis, but he does not appear in this one. As a result, some fans believe Lemarquis will reprise his role as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (who does not appear in this film) in a future sequel.

The plot of this film can be found in 98 of the 137 minutes of the original Dune (1984) and 104 of the 270 minutes of the Dune (2000) mini-series (all of the first episode and 14 minutes of the second episode).

Hans Zimmer, a major fan of the novel Dune, turned down the opportunity to collaborate on Tenet (2020) with frequent partner Christopher Nolan to soundtrack this film.

In a Vanity Fair article, Denis Villeneuve said that his Dune adaptation will be split into two films to guarantee that the original tale is "kept and not torn into a million bits." Unlike the normal practice of filming multiple installments in a row, only the first film (approximately covering the first half of the original text) was approved and made, with a possible sequel depending on how well the first film performs.

The previous Dune (1984) filmmaker, David Lynch, indicated that he had "zero interest in Dune (2021)." He stated that his concerns with the new film are unrelated to director Denis Villeneuve, but rather to his sad memories of working on the 1984 version: "Because it was a source of anguish for me. It was a flop, and I didn't get to see the final cut. This is a story I've told a billion times. It's not the film I had envisioned. Certain aspects of it appeal to me, but overall, it was a complete disaster for me."

Denis Villeneuve has had a longtime desire to adapt Frank Herbert's novel Dune for the big screen, ever since he first learned about David Lynch's cult classic Dune (1984) via the magazines Fantastic Films and Starlog, and read the novel when he was approximately twelve years old. He wanted to make an accurate adaptation, so he waited until he'd completed the sci-fi films Arrival (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) to gain experience in the area before beginning production on Dune (2021). His interpretations of sequences from the novel have a tremendous influence on scenes from his previous films.

Mistakes: Dune

  • The Reverend Mother refers to Jessica as Duke Leto's wife when they meet with Baron Harkonnen. Leto is not married to Jessica; she is his concubine. Leto even tells Jessica in their final time together, "I should have married you."
  • The sandworms' length is measured in meters when Paul learns about Arrakis from the projector device, yet the tree roots are measured in feet. The film's other length references are in meters.
  • The signet ring is worn on Duke Leto's middle finger. It fits snuggly on Paul's index finger when he puts it on in the desert. His father's ring would fit loosely on all of his fingers on a "thin" 15-year-old child.
