Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a 2021 American superhero film starring Venom from Marvel Comics, developed by Columbia Pictures in collaboration with Marvel. It is the second film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe and the sequel to Venom, and it is distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing (2018). Andy Serkis directs the picture from a script by Kelly Marcel, based on a story she co-wrote with Tom Hardy, who co-stars alongside Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, and Woody Harrelson as Eddie Brock/Venom. Brock tries to acclimate to life as the host of the alien symbiote Venom, while serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson) escapes from prison after becoming the host of Carnage, Venom's violent spawn.

Venom was supposed to represent the start of a new shared universe, and ideas for a sequel started while the first film was being made. Harrelson was cast to play Kasady at the end of Venom, with the goal of him becoming Carnage in the sequel. The sequel's official production began in January 2019, with Hardy and Harrelson confirmed to return, as well as Marcel as the writer. Serkis was selected as director in August of that year, in part because of his previous experience with CGI and motion-capture technology, which was crucial in representing Venom and Carnage in the picture. From November 2019 until February 2020, filming took place at Leavesden Studios in England, with additional filming in San Francisco in February. In April 2020, the title was revealed. The comic book story arc "Maximum Carnage" (1993) and the 1994 Spider-Man animated series "The Venom Saga" (1996) served as major inspirations for the picture.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage had its world debut on September 14, 2021, in London, and was distributed in theaters on October 1, 2021 in the United States. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, it was postponed from its original October 2020 deadline. The film grossed over $395.8 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing picture of 2021. Critics gave it mixed reviews, but it was generally thought to be an improvement over its predecessor.

Storyline: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

In 1996, a young Cletus Kasady stands helpless as his sweetheart, Frances Barrison, is taken from St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children to the Ravencroft Institute because she possesses the ability to manipulate sound. She escapes by using her sonic scream powers and strikes young police officer Patrick Mulligan on the way. He shoots Barrison in the eye and injures his ear as a result of her scream. Barrison is taken to the facility, which is hardened against her powers, unbeknownst to Mulligan, who believes he murdered her.

Mulligan, now a detective, approaches Eddie Brock in the present day to meet with Kasady, a serial killer who refuses to speak to anybody other than Brock after their interview a year ago. After the visit, Eddie's symbiote, Venom, can figure out where Kasady has hidden the bodies of the victims, giving Brock a tremendous boost in his career. Brock is then contacted by his ex-fiancée Anne Weying, who informs him that she is now engaged to Dr. Dan Lewis, much to the chagrin of Venom.

Kasady, who was found guilty of his crimes and sentenced to death by lethal injection, invites Brock to attend his execution at San Quentin State Prison, where Kasady sits on death row. Venom, on the other hand, is provoked to assault Kasady by Brock's comments. Kasady eats a small piece of the symbiote by biting Brock's hand. Back at home, Venom has a dispute with Brock about having greater freedom to eat evil people, and the two fight until the symbiote detaches from his body and they go their separate ways.

When a red symbiote emerges and prevents the injection, Kasady's execution fails. He goes by the name Carnage and goes on a rampage across the prison, liberating convicts and killing guards. Carnage agrees to help Kasady free Barrison from Ravencroft in exchange for Kasady's assistance in eliminating Brock and Venom. Mulligan dials Brock's number and informs him of the issue. Kasady frees Barrison in Ravencroft, and the two go to their former children's home to burn it down.

Mulligan brings Brock to the police station, distrustful of him because of his interactions with Kasady before Carnage appeared. Brock refuses to answer Mulligan's inquiries and seeks legal advice from Weying. Brock explains that Venom has parted ways with him and that the symbiote is required to battle Carnage together. Weying discovers Venom jumping from body to body as he makes his way around San Francisco, and persuades him to forgive Brock. She forms a bond with Venom and manages to free Brock from the police station. Brock and Venom make amends and rekindle their relationship.

After failing to locate Brock, Kasady kidnaps Mulligan, and Barrison kidnaps Weying. Barrison provides information on Weying's whereabouts to Lewis, who then passes it on to Brock. Kasady and Barrison intend to marry in a cathedral, where Venom will come and battle Carnage. Mulligan appears to be killed by Barrison, who hangs him from a chain. Venom holds his own against his spawn, but Carnage eventually overwhelms him and assassinates Weying atop the cathedral. Venom saves Weying just in time, prompting Barrison to utilize her powers once more; her sonic explosion causes both symbiotes to detach from their hosts as the cathedral falls, and Barrison is killed by a falling bell.

Before the hit, Venom bonds with Brock and saves him. Carnage tries to re-bond with Kasady, but the symbiote is devoured by Venom. Kasady claims that all he wanted was to be Brock's friend, then Venom bites off Kasady's head. A still-living Mulligan's eyes glow blue as Brock, Venom, Weying, and Lewis flee. Brock and Venom decide to take a break while they figure out what they want to do next. A blinding light takes them from their hotel room to another room where they watch J. Jonah Jameson reveal his Spider-Man identity as Jonah Jameson. Man's as Peter Parker on television as Venom tells Brock about the symbiotes' awareness of other realities.

Some trifles: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

When Eddie and Venom were arguing in his flat, Tom Hardy recorded words as Venom, which were then played back by a sound operator (through an earpiece Hardy wore). As a frustrated Eddie, Hardy was able to improvise his dialogue using this approach.

Patrick Mulligan's eyes flame blue in his final moments, indicating that he possesses his symbiote and setting the scene for his role as Toxin. The toxin, the offspring of Carnage and the first symbiote Spider-Man considers an ally in the comics, is the first symbiote Spider-Man truly considers an ally. He first formed a bond with Mulligan, then Eddie Brock.

The first SSMU (Sony's Spider-Man Universe) film to acknowledge MCU events, as seen in the post-credits scene where Venom and Eddie see J. Jonah Jameson's (J.K. Simmons) Daily Bugle broadcast confirming Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) identity as Spider-Man and framing him for the death of Mysterio/Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

Venom sets up a stack of magazines for Brock when he walks inside Mrs. Chen's business. Stan Lee, a Marvel writer, is featured on the cover of both of these publications.

Andy Serkis credits The Odd Couple (1970) as an influence on Eddie Brock and Venom's relationship: "They're still discovering how to interact with one another. Eddie is battling Venom, who is acting erratically like a toddler, and Venom feels trapped in Eddie's body."

After Christopher Reeve (Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man (2015)), Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk (2008)), and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 2 (2018)), Tom Hardy became the sixth person to gain writing credit for a comic book superhero picture in which he also starred.

Carnage, according to Andy Serkis, should have "Cletus has great intelligence and humor, and that's reflected in the symbiote that's tied to him; Carnage's fun, wit, and oddity, you just can't pin him down." Fighting Carnage is like fighting an octopus in terms of difficulty. " On a performance-capture stage, Serkis and his colleagues tested and built out Carnage's moves with a bunch of dancers and performers.

This is the shortest superhero picture (excluding straight-to-video and/or animated superhero films) since Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), which lasted 92 minutes.

Andy Serkis was chosen over Travis Knight, Rupert Sanders, and Rupert Wyatt to direct the sequel.

Mistakes: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

  • The jail sergeant is wearing his collar brass backward.
  • Eddie goes left (by counter-steering to the right) to avoid hitting the automobile in the rain sequence, but the bike turns right.
