Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed Red Notice, a 2021 American action comedy film. It stars Dwayne Johnson as an FBI agent who reluctantly joins forces with a known art thief (Ryan Reynolds) to arrest an even more notorious crook (Gal Gadot). Following Central Intelligence (2016) and Skyscraper (2018), this is Thurber's third collaboration with Johnson, and Johnson's second collaboration with Reynolds, following Hobbs & Shaw (2019).

The film was originally set to be released by Universal Pictures, but Netflix bought the rights to distribute it. On November 5, 2021, it had a limited theatrical debut before being released digitally on the platform on November 12, 2021. Critics largely gave the picture a bad assessment.

Storyline: Red Notice

Two thousand years ago, Marcus Antonius gave Cleopatra three bejeweled eggs as a wedding gift, indicating his devotion. The eggs were lost to the passage of time until two were discovered by a farmer in 1907, with the third remaining undiscovered. In 2021, FBI criminal profiler Special Agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is sent to help Interpol agent Urvashi Das (Ritu Arya) in the investigation of the theft of one of the eggs on display at the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Das has the room locked down after determining the egg on display is a counterfeit and the genuine egg has been stolen. However, before the door is sealed shut, Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), an international art thief, gets to flee, chased by Hartley. Booth eventually returns to Bali with the egg, only to find Hartley, Das, and an Interpol strike team waiting for him. Booth is apprehended, and the egg is taken into custody. Sarah Black, AKA "The Bishop," (Gal Gadot) Booth's main competitor, is dressed as one of the strike team members and switches the real egg with another counterfeit in the rear of the car, unbeknownst to anyone else. Das confronts Hartley the next day, assuming he is the one who stole the egg. As a result, she has him imprisoned in the same cell as Booth in a distant Russian prison.

They are brought to Black shortly after their arrival, where she offers to Booth that they work together to uncover the third egg, disclosing to Hartley that he knows where it is. Booth declines her low-ball offer and walks away, promising to find the second egg; when she does, she tells him that his portion will be reduced. Hartley suggests that he and Booth team up to defeat Black. If Booth assists him in apprehending Black, she will be dethroned as the world's top art thief. The two break out of prison and travel to Valencia to take the second egg, which is being held by legendary arms dealer Sotto Voce at a masquerade event. hey run into Black, who is also planning to steal it. Hartley and Booth fight Black with a range of martial weapons on display in Voce's vault before she binds them together. While Black reveals she and Voce are working together, Voce arrives with his security detail and apprehends the men.

They torture Hartley, and Black double-crosses Voce by leaving for Egypt, where Booth claims the third egg is, assuming Booth has revealed its location. Following his departure from Valencia, Booth informs Hartley that the egg is in Argentina, a location only he knows since it was etched on his late father's cherished watch, which had originally belonged to Adolf Hitler's art curator, Rudolph Zeich. Zeich fled Europe with the egg after the Third Reich came apart in 1945. The team searches Argentina's jungles for a secret bunker, which they discover. There are numerous Nazi treasures inside, including the third egg. Black approaches with a gun to steal the egg from the two, only to be intercepted by Das and a team of local cops. Hartley, Booth, and Black elude Das in an armored truck by traveling through an abandoned copper mine near the bunker in an ancient Mercedes. They eventually emerge near the top of a waterfall, jump over it, and land in a lake at the bottom. Booth swims to shore with the egg, only to discover that Hartley and Black, who go by the nickname "Bishop," are loving and professional partners. They bind Booth to a tree in the rainforest when he surrenders the egg.

In Cairo, Hartley and Black deliver the three eggs to an Egyptian millionaire buyer in time for his daughter's wedding (much as Marc Antony did for Cleopatra). When the bride is more excited by the wedding singer, Ed Sheeran, the gesture is eclipsed. Das' Interpol raid interrupts the wedding after that. Hartley and Black are alone on their yacht when they are approached by Booth, who informs them that he informed Das about their Cayman Islands account containing the $300 million payoffs from the Egyptian billionaire, which Das has frozen. Booth also informs them that Interpol is on its way to apprehend them, but he gives them a way out if they help him pull off a fresh robbery that will require three people to pull off. They agree and flee, and Das issues red notices to all three of them as they prepare to rob the Louvre in Paris.

Some trifles from Red Notice

No one is depicted dying in the film, including many anonymous henchmen and museum and prison guards.

As for their characters, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson both consume their brands of bourbon. Dwayne has Teremana Tequila and Ryan has Aviation American Gin (in separate scenes).

The film has a budget of around $200 million, making it Netflix's most expensive feature film to date.

Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot are expected to earn more than $20 million each for their parts in the film.

Rome, Bali, Valencia, Cairo, Argentina, Sardinia, and London are among the exotic locations and settings featured in this jet-setting, globe-trotting film. However, many of the places were in Georgia, USA, which served as a stand-in for a variety of locations.

"The Cleopatra's Eggs," a pair of three ancient bejeweled artifacts, is the film's MacGuffin. The object at stake in a suspense thriller is referred to as a "MacGuffin" in Hitchcockian terms. When the other man states there aren't any lions in Scotland, the first man adds, "Guess there isn't a MacGuffin, then." So, the MacGuffin is the object that starts the plot but has very little real meaning in the plot and is essentially useless. In the film, "Look for a box that says 'MacGuffin,'" says Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in the film.

Before Universal Studios sold the distribution rights to Netflix, the film was set to be released in theaters.

In this picture, Ryan Reynolds plays the son of a police officer. In real life, his father was a police officer.

At 1:27:38, John Hartley shines a light on a container labeled "Top Secret Army Intel 9906753 Do Not Open" as they enter the vault. At the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, that's the crate number that holds the Ark of the Covenant. A few seconds before, Nolan Booth whistled the theme song.

Mistakes on Red Notice

When Nolan is conversing with Hartley, he has one champagne flute on his tray, but when Agent Das walks by, she grabs a second from the tray.
The caption reads "Argentina" at 1 hr 21 m, while the coordinates and location on-screen indicate Misiones Province in Argentina's extreme north. The image displayed, however, is of a very tall mountain. The Andes, 700 miles to the west, are the closest mountains to Misiones Province, which is essentially flat.
Given the tropical rainforest conditions surrounding the Nazi vault, the diesel fuel in the vehicles would have long since destabilized, and the fuel lines would have been destroyed by varnish and moisture.
Bishop and Hartley are both unmasked when they dance at Sotto Voce's party, breaking the rule of anonymity for attending the party.
According to Hartley, the Nazi chamber they discovered was erected on the site of an old copper mine. Argentina's first copper mine, however, did not open until 1997 and is located almost 700 miles to the west in Catamarca Province.
