Clueless (1995)

Amy Heckerling wrote and directed Clueless, a 1995 American coming-of-age teen comedy film. Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd star in the film. Scott Rudin and Robert Lawrence produced it. With a modern-day setting in Beverly Hills, it is partially based on Jane Austen's 1815 classic Emma. Cher Horowitz, a gorgeous, popular, and wealthy high school girl, befriends Tai Frasier, a new student, and decides to give her a makeover.

Clueless was shot over 40 days in California. The director of the film researched real Beverly Hills high school kids to learn how real teenagers spoke in the 1990s and to pick up some relevant slang terminology.

In the United States, the movie grossed $56.1 million. It has earned positive critical praise and is regarded as one of the best teen pictures of all time. Clueless has a cult following and has left a lasting legacy. The film was followed by a spin-off television show, a series of books, and the announcement that a remake would be made by Paramount Pictures.

Storyline: Clueless (1995)

Cher Horowitz lives in a Beverly Hills house with her affluent father, Mel, a stern lawyer; her mother died when she was a baby during a liposuction procedure. Cher is gorgeous, elegant, sweet, and well-liked. She goes to Bronson Alcott High School with her affluent and attractive best friend, Dionne Davenport. Murray Duvall, a prominent student, has been Dionne's boyfriend for a long time. Cher thinks that Dionne should be dating more older men and that this is a futile endeavor for her.

Cher's ex-stepbrother, Josh, who is socially conscious, pays her a visit on a break from college. They spar constantly, but in a lighthearted manner. He teases her for being selfish, shallow, and superficial, stating her only goal in life is "toward the mall," while she mocks his idealism.

Cher resolves to play matchmaker for two hard-grading professors at her school, Mr. Hall and Miss Geist, after earning a bad mark. She sets up a romance between the two teachers in order to get them to lower their grading standards so she may renegotiate a poor mark on her report card. Cher finds that she enjoys doing good things after witnessing their increased happiness. She then chooses to help the community by "adopting" Tai Frasier, a "tragically unhip" new girl at school.

Tai gets a makeover from Cher and Dionne, which gives her confidence and a sense of style. Cher tries to break up Tai's relationship with Travis Birkenstock, an amicable but clumsy slacker, by directing her to Elton, a handsome and popular student. Elton, on the other hand, is uninterested in Tai and instead tries to make out with Cher in his car, but she rejects him.

Cher's eye at school and Christian, a fashion-conscious new student, catches Cher's eye and becomes her target boyfriend. Josh was envious of Cher's relationship with Christian and followed her to a party "simply to look after her." She tries to seduce him when he comes over to watch movies at her house, but he rejects her advances. Following that, Murray informs Cher and Dionne that Christian is gay. Cher remains friends with Christian despite the rejection of her romantic attempts, owing to her admiration for his good taste in art and fashion.

When Tai's sudden fame puts a strain on their relationship, Cher's affluent life takes a turn for the worse. Cher's anger grows when she fails her driving test and is unable to reverse the outcome. Tai reveals her affections for Josh and asks Cher for aid in pursuing him when Cher returns home upset. In response, Cher claims that Tai is not the proper man for Josh, resulting in a squabble in which Tai refers to Cher as a "virgin who can't drive." Cher focuses on her priorities and her recurrent failures to comprehend or appreciate the people in her life, feeling "completely stupid."

Cher finally learns that she is in love with Tai after pondering why she is concerned by Tai's romantic interest in Josh. Cher makes clumsy but honest attempts to live a more purposeful life, including leading the school's disaster relief effort in Pismo Beach. Cher and Josh eventually act on their affections for each other, which culminates in a sweet kiss. Cher's connections with Tai and Dionne are cemented, Tai and Travis begin dating, Mr. Hall and Miss Geist marry, and Cher catches the bridal bouquet, assisting Josh in winning a $200 bet. She kisses Josh after she embraces him.

Some trifles from Clueless (1995)

In the classroom scene, Alicia Silverstone (Cher) truly didn't know how to pronounce "Haitians." Amy Heckerling, the director, urged the crew not to correct her since she loved it and wanted it in the movie.

The performers couldn't hold their breath long enough to pass a genuine credit card from mouth to mouth during the game of "Suck and Blow," so cardboard pretend card was used instead, which didn't work. To make it easier, holes were punched into it, and when that failed, the entire cast's lips were generously smeared with chapstick to compel the card to stick.

Murray, Christian, and Elton were all auditioned for by Paul Rudd. Rudd assumed Murray's role was that of a white adolescent attempting to imitate a rapper.

Paul Rudd's rucksack, which contained his script for the film, was stolen while he was filming.

Jane Austen's work "Emma" inspired the plot, characters, ideas, and morals. When Amy Heckerling was approached by Paramount Pictures to develop a film for teenagers, she immediately remembered a novel she had read as a child.

Mr. Hall was modeled after the real-life Beverly Hills High debate coach, Herb Hall, who was a friend of filmmaker Amy Heckerling. The role of the school principal was handed to the genuine Herb Hall as a courtesy.

Brittany Murphy's character, Tai, criticizes Cher by calling her a virgin who can't drive at one point. Murphy later admitted that she was a virgin and couldn't drive at the time of filming.

Many people believe the costuming budget for the film must have been large, but it was actually rather small for a massive blockbuster film, according to Jen Chaney's book "As If!," commemorating the film's twentieth anniversary. Mona May's 63 clothing changes cost only $200,000 because she wanted the girls to seem like mall rats, not models. According to Entertainment Weekly magazine, the most expensive garment was the plaid Jean Paul Gaultier suit worn by Alicia Silverstone in the opening sequences, which she got to keep, along with all of her other clothes from the film, which she gave away to charity, according to Entertainment Weekly magazine.

A pamphlet titled "How to Speak Cluelessly" was one of the promotional items issued in conjunction with the film. It contained a dictionary of many of the made-up terms used in the Clueless (1995) world, some of which became common adolescent slang at the time. A "Baldwin" could be a particularly attractive male, as in the famous brother actors.

There are 53 different tartans and plaids featured in the film, seven of which are worn by Cher and 12 by other prominent characters.

Stacey Dash, who plays Cher's best friend Dionne, is two years older than Paul Rudd, even though Josh is in college and older than the other characters, who are still in high school.

Mistakes on Clueless (1995)

  • Cher replies, "For a couple of hours." but mouths"... or something" as Tai and Cher sat down at the table after their workout.
  • Cher says she's in Sun Valley while she's outside Circus Liquor. North Hollywood's Circus Liquor is a well-known landmark.
  • While taking her driving test, Cher scrapes up against a white car, ripping off her passenger mirror. The mirror is still there and the automobile is immaculate when the DMV proctor requests her to pull over.
  • The shadow of a camera may be seen traveling down the wall while Cher waits by the phone, waiting for Christian to call.
  • Cher does not attempt to switch off the oven when she burns the tube of cookie dough and tries to blow the smoke away.
  • Cher is referred to as "Cher Horowitz" by the debate teacher, but her name is "Cher Hamilton" on her report card (as seen by her father after the grades have been changed). Her father tosses a piece of mail away before looking at her report card, which also says "Melvin Hamilton."
  • Cher claims that Elton was recently single the day after Tai got her make-over and needed a boyfriend. Tai then inquires as to who Elton John is, despite Cher mentioning him on her first day of school. She could, however, have easily forgotten his name. Many people take the time to learn the names of new acquaintances.
  • Cher uses the payphone to call Josh and dials the number without inserting any cash. Josh also hangs up the phone without knowing her specific location in Sun Valley.
  • Summer can see the extension cable that the snowman is plugged into when she is taking it out of the party to her car and holding it, but it is still lit when she shuts the door and the cord is dangling out the window. When she drives away, it is still lit.
  • Mr. Hall's stand-in is half a foot taller and has different hair in the wedding scene. This was very probably done on purpose to make it look like Cher and Josh were getting married.
