The Blue Lagoon (1980)

The Blue Lagoon is a 1980 American romantic survival drama film directed by Randal Kleiser, based on the 1908 novel of the same name by Henry De Vere Stacpoole and based on a screenplay written by Douglas Day Stewart. Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins feature in the picture. Basil Poledouris composed the score, and Néstor Almendros directed the cinematography.

The story follows two young children who become stranded on a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific. However, without the supervision or constraints of society, individuals experience emotional and physical changes as they approach puberty and fall in love.

Columbia Pictures released The Blue Lagoon in theaters on June 20, 1980. The film's screenplay, execution, and Shields' performance were all lambasted by critics; however, Almendros' cinematography was praised. Despite the negative reviews, the picture was a commercial success, generating more than $58 million on a $4.5 million budget and ranking as the ninth highest-grossing film in North America in 1980. The film garnered a Saturn Award nomination for Best Fantasy Film, an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for Almendros, and a Golden Globe nod for New Star of the Year – Actor for Atkins. For her work in the film, Shields received the first Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.

Storyline: The Blue Lagoon (1980)

Two young cousins, Richard (Glenn Kohan as Young Richard) and Emmeline Lestrange (Elva Josephson as Young Emmeline), and a galley cook, Paddy Button (Leo McKern), survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific and arrive on a lush tropical island in the late Victorian period. Paddy looks after the kids and bans them from visiting the opposite side of the island, where he discovered the remains of horrific human sacrifices on an altar. He also tells them not to consume the poisonous scarlet berries. After a drunken spree, Paddy dies. The children are now on their own and must rebuild their home in another portion of the island.

Richard and Emmeline's experiences with puberty are unpleasant due to their lack of understanding of human sexuality. Emmeline is the first to feel sexual attraction to Richard, which makes her uncomfortable, so she refuses to tell him about her "weird" ideas. She is terrified of her first menstrual period and refuses to let Richard examine her for a wound, which he believes she has.

Richard eventually realizes his attraction to Emmeline. She goes to the forbidden side of the island and views the altar in private. She connects the blood on the altar to the blood of Christ's crucifixion, deduces that the altar is God, and tries to persuade Richard to join her in praying on the other side of the island. Richard is taken aback by the prospect of breaching the law, and the two get into an argument. When Richard tries to establish sexual contact with Emmeline, she rejects him; as a result, Richard hides and masturbates away from her.

For the first time in years, a ship appears, but Emmeline fails to ignite the signal fire, and the ship passes them by without noticing them. When Richard confronts Emmeline about her failure, she declares, much to Richard's surprise, that the island is now their home and that they should stay. Emmeline admits she is aware of Richard's masturbation and threatens to inform her Uncle Arthur. They fight, and Emmeline accidentally hits Richard in the head with a coconut. Enraged and hurt, Richard kicks Emmeline out of their refuge.

Emmeline steps on a deadly stonefish by accident. She begs Richard to "carry [her] to God," as she is weak from the poison. Richard carries her to the other side of the island, where he sets her on the altar and prays for her. Richard admits his worry about losing Emmeline after she recovers. They swim naked in the lagoon and then swim to shore after Emmeline regains her ability to walk. Richard and Emmeline find sexual intercourse while still nude and fall in love. As a result, Emmeline becomes pregnant, despite the fact that neither of them is aware of it. Instead, they are taken aback when they feel the baby move inside her abdomen and mistakenly believe it is her stomach moving.

Richard is alone in the shelter months later when he hears a sound from afar and immediately heads to the other side of the island. He discovers a group of indigenous people performing a ceremony in front of the monument, during which someone is sacrificed. Fearing for his life, Richard flees to find Emmeline, who is in labor. Emmeline gives birth to a son, Paddy, whom they name.

The island is approached by a ship headed by Richard's father, Arthur (William Daniels), who sees the family playing on the beach. Richard and Emmeline walk away from the ship instead of signaling for assistance, pleased with their life. Because they're covered in mud, it's difficult to see who they are, so Arthur guesses they're not Richard and Emmeline.

The family uses the lifeboat to return to their original homesite one day. Richard goes banana hunting, leaving Emmeline and Paddy in charge of the boat. When Paddy carries a branch of scarlet berries onto the boat, Emmeline doesn't notice. Paddy tosses one of the oars out of the boat as Emmeline and Paddy slowly drift away. Emmeline, unable to reach the oar, calls out to Richard, who swims to her, followed by a shark. Emmeline tosses the other oar at the shark, striking it and allowing Richard to board the boat. The boat becomes entangled in the current and is swept out to sea.

Richard and Emmeline wake up to see Paddy eating the berries he had harvested after wandering for days. Richard and Emmeline, despondent, devour the berries as well, lying down to die. Arthur's ship catches them a few hours later. "Are they dead?" Arthur inquires. Gus Mercurio, the captain, assures him, "Sir, no. They're dozing off ".

Some trifles from The Blue Lagoon (1980)

After seeing the clip, John Gibbons, a herpetologist (reptile scientist) at the University of the South Pacific, determined that the iguanas in it were a separate species that had never been seen or reported by experts. Following that, he traveled to Nanuya Levu, the Fijian island where the film was shot, and named the species the Fiji Crested Iguana.

A body double appears in the majority of Emmeline Lestrange's naked sequences. For the other shots, Brooke Shields' hair had to be bonded to her chest.

When Brooke Shields' original nude body double hurt her back, the producers turned to a lady they had hired to catch and teach dolphins and asked if she would be willing to do it because she had Shields' body type. She consented and had no qualms about swimming in her underwear.

Although the film received a mixed response in the United States and was panned by many critics, it remains a popular nostalgic film in Romania, Hungary, and Brazil, where it is routinely rerun on television.

Many performers were scared off by the director's original plan of having the two mature characters play the entire film naked (including Jennifer Jason Leigh, who was the first choice for the female lead). The producers offered Diane Lane and Willie Aames the pictures after screen-testing them together in Mexico, where Lane was shooting a Western, but the two discussed the nudity after the crew departed and contacted them a few days later to say they wouldn't do it, either. With filming about to begin in just a few days, the frantic director agreed to let Shields shoot the movie mostly in his underwear, with a body duplicate for the naked parts. After that was established, the casting director went back over the thousands of audition videos they had created over a year and thought Christopher Atkins would be fine if he permed his hair to make him look more ferocious.

Christopher Atkins' double was originally one of the seaplane pilots that flew personnel and cast from Fiji's mainland to the island where the film was shot. He did most of the nudist scenes, as well as a few minor stunts, with Brooke Shields' double.

The majority of Christopher Atkins' nudist sequences were shot without the assistance of a body duplicate. According to reports, he had to stand naked every morning before shooting these scenes, while a female cosmetics artist prepared his physique.

Mistakes on The Blue Lagoon (1980)

  • While the three children are playing in the mud, a blue sailing ship passes by the island. Modern radar equipment can be seen high up on the mast as the ship turns to leave.
  • When Emmeline is training the infant to swim, she invites Richard to come down and see. When Em is carrying the infant, a child's laughter can be heard that does not belong to any of the characters. Later, you hear Paddy, the toddler, laugh, and it sounds exactly like the laugh you heard earlier.
  • When Paddy dies, and the children pack up the dinghy, the homemade toy boat is prominently placed on top of their things. When they return to the original hut years later, Richard is digging through the ruins and discovers the toy boat that he certainly brought with him.
  • The island is home to both macaws and cockatoos. Cockatoos are from Australia, while Macaws are from South America.
  • Emmeline feels sick after accidentally stepping on a fish in the water. The fish in the film is called a "stone fish," and stepping on one will inflict extreme agony, shock, paralysis, tissue death, and death if not treated within a few hours. Emmeline does not appear to be suffering from any of these symptoms, and it appears that it will be some time before Richard locates her.
  • Em is wearing lipstick while swimming beneath the water around the 28-minute mark. Her hair is brushed extremely thoroughly every 30 minutes, as if by a professional hairdresser.
  • Richard and Emmeline show no indications of sunburn or tanning despite being stuck on an island for years.
  • Richard and Emmeline grew up on an isolated island far from civilization. Both men, though, are shaved. Richard should have developing sideburns and some peach-fuzz on his chin, even if he doesn't have a full beard. He even mentions that "all these hairs" are growing on his body. Emmeline's armpits should also be hirsute. Where did they get razors and how did they learn to shave?
