Leos Carax's English-language debut, Annette, is a musical psychological drama film released in 2021. The story and music for the film were written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks, with Carax contributing lyrics. It's a rock opera about a stand-up comedian (Adam Driver) and his opera singer wife (Marion Cotillard), and how their lives are transformed after they birth their first kid. Devyn McDowell and Simon Helberg also star.

Annette was distributed in France by UGC Distribution on July 7, 2021, one day after it premiered as the opening film at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where Carax won Best Director. Critics have given the film good reviews.

Storyline: Annette (2021)

After a brief romance, provocative stand-up comedian Henry McHenry openly announces his engagement to world-famous singer Ann Desfranoux. Not long after, Ann gives birth to their daughter Annette, who is played by a wooden marionette puppet. When Henry begins to look after Annette while Annette's career takes off and takes her on an international tour, the marriage becomes strained.

Ann has nightmares about Henry almost killing her and dreams about six women who come forward with charges of past abuse at the hands of Henry. Henry's career continues to slide at home, compounded by an onstage meltdown, and he grows resentful of Ann's continuous success. The two decide to embark on a private cruise to try to restore their relationship. The cruise, however, ends in disaster when Ann falls overboard on a stormy night after Henry compels her to waltz with him while inebriated. Henry uses a lifeboat to go to an island with Annette after he finds his wife is dead. Both fall asleep there when Ann's spirit enters and lends Annette's voice as a form of vengeance so she can haunt Henry.

Henry finds himself in a financial bind without Ann's salary, while being absolved of legal suspicion for her death. He reaches out to Annette's former accompanist, revealing Annette's singing voice and proposing that they employ her talent in a musical show. The accompanist grudgingly agrees, having fallen in love with Ann, and Baby Annette becomes a worldwide sensation as they tour together. Henry, plagued by memories of Ann, continues to drink heavily and remains out late. When Henry returns home one night, he hears Annette performing a cover of Ann and Henry's song, "We Love Each Other So Much." He confronts the pianist, who claims to be Annette's biological father. As a form of retribution, Henry drowns him in the backyard pool, which Annette witnesses from her bedroom window. Henry has one final performance planned at the "Hyperbowl" halftime show, but Annette refuses to sing and instead declares to the crowd, "Daddy kills people." Henry is put on trial and found guilty. A few years later, Annette pays a visit to her father in prison.

Annette dismisses his attempts at reconciliation, even accusing her mother of manipulating her for vengeance. He now has "nothing to love," she informs him. We observe the Annette puppet lying motionless on the floor after the living Annette has left.

Some trifles from Annette (2021)

Annette was never supposed to be a film; instead, it was envisioned as a Sparks record. In 2009, Sparks wrote and recorded a narrative musical called "The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman." With a large ensemble cast, The excursion proved to be too difficult. As a result, Annette was written by the band. They were getting ready to release and tour the piece (2012) when they met Leos Carax at Cannes after he featured a Sparks song in his film Holy Motors.

Simon Helberg was so keen to get the part that he became a French citizen and began learning the language, as the product required more EU citizens in the cast to receive EU funding. Marion Cotillard was cast in the part previously played by Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams, proving that it was unneeded.

While filming in Brussels, Leos Carax's dog "Javelot" was startled by passing traffic and bolted, prompting Adam Driver to make a video cry for aid on social media, which was retweeted by several individuals, including Mark Hamill. Javelot was later discovered in a nearby train station, safe and sound.

Rooney Mara was cast but did not participate. Later, Michelle Williams took her position, but she left after the movie became stuck in development, and Marion Cotillard stepped in.

Filming began in August 2019, with locales including Los Angeles, Brussels, and Bruges, as well as Münster, Cologne, and Bonn in Germany. The project was completed in November of this year.

Only the second time in Leos Carax's career has he not cast his regular star, Denis Lavant. The other film in which Lavant does not appear was Pola X (1999).

Kristen Stewart was offered the lead part but turned it down due to her inability to sing adequately.

Annette was released in France by UGC Distribution on July 6, 2021, and debuted as the opening feature at the Cannes Film Festival that same day.

Belgian singer Angèle (born Angèle Van Laeken) makes her acting debut. She began her career as an influencer before becoming a well-known pop artist in Europe in 2018 with her platinum-selling album, "Brol."
