The French Dispatch (FulLᴴᴰMoVie) 2021

The Liberty's French Dispatch, Kansas Wes Anderson wrote, directed, and produced "Evening Sun," a 2021 American anthology comedy film based on a tale he co-wrote with Roman Coppola, Hugo Guinness, and Jason Schwartzman. It has a big ensemble cast and explores three different narratives as the fictional Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun newspaper's French foreign desk prepares its final edition.

The first section, "The Concrete Masterpiece," stars Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, and Léa Seydoux and follows a jailed and unstable artist. The second film, "Revisions to a Manifesto," stars Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, and Lyna Khoudri, and is inspired by the May 1968 student uprisings. The kidnapping of a police commissioner's son is the subject of "The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner," which stars Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, and Stephen Park. Arthur Howitzer Jr., the paper's editor, is played by Bill Murray, while Owen Wilson appears in a brief scene that introduces the film's fictional locale of Ennui-sur-Blasé.

In August 2018, the project was first reported as an untitled musical set after WWII. The film was initially announced in December, with Anderson describing it as "a love letter to journalists." Filming took place in Angoulême, France, between November 2018 and March 2019, with cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman. Andrew Weisblum finished the editing in post-production, while Alexandre Desplat wrote the score.

The French Dispatch premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on July 12, 2021, after a postponement from 2020, and was theatrically distributed in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on October 22, 2021. It garnered mostly positive reviews, including compliments on the score, production design, and acting. It grossed $43 million globally against a $25 million budget.

Some trifles from The French Dispatch (2021)

Wes Anderson told GQ that he never had the inconvenience of ever thinking of anybody else for this character, even for a second, when hiring Timothée Chalamet as Zeffirelli. He was cast in the part because it was tailor-made for him.

During the closing credits, several of The French Dispatch's past covers are featured. They were inspired by The New Yorker's covers and were made by Spanish cartoonist Javi Aznarez.

Several covers of The French Dispatch are presented during the end credits. One depicts a table with a wine glass, plate, and fork, as well as a revolver with a knife affixed to the barrel's bottom. In a 2004 American Express: My Life. My Card. (2006) commercial featuring Wes Anderson, a similar revolver/knife combo was also briefly featured. In the commercial, Anderson requests a ".357 with a bayonet" from his production armorer in the ".357". Anderson accepts a sketch of a revolver with a bayonet mounted to the bottom of the barrel, which the armorer returns with quickly.

According to a February 2020 New Yorker article, the film is set in the imaginary French village of "Ennui-sur-Blasé." "Ennui" and "blasé" are two English words that generally express the same thing: world-weary ennui, apathy, and sophistication (even though they are also French words). The term "sur" ("upon") is frequently used in French place names as a geographical descriptor; for example, the French Riviera hamlet name "Beaulieu-sur-Mer" translates as "beautiful spot upon the sea." "Ennui-sur-Blasé" would roughly translate to "Boredom-upon-Apathy" if it were an actual place name.

Wes Anderson has worked with Bill Murray on nine occasions, Owen Wilson on eight occasions, and Jason Schwartzman on seven occasions (plus two shorts).

Because every scene they did was done with as much improvisation as possible, but still with a well-written script to go off of, the cast all agreed that working on this film was the most exhilarating, demanding, and enjoyable experience they'd ever had with any movie.

The French Dispatch's production design was handled by Adam Stockhausen. Stockhausen and his colleagues started their scouting procedure by looking for interesting places on Google Maps before visiting them in person. "It felt like Paris, but not as it is today-more a sort of recollection of Paris, the Paris of Jacques Tati," Stockhausen and Anderson imagined. Angoulême was chosen as the team's last destination.

In a March 2019 interview with French media Konbini, Mathieu Amalric claimed that his character was influenced by Louis Jouvet's character in Henri-Georges Clouzot's film Quai des Orfèvres (1947). As a result, Wes Anderson, the film's writer, producer, and director, requested that he see the film again in order to prepare for the role.

At the Cannes Picture Festival, the film received a 9-minute standing ovation.
