Storyline: He Got Game (1998)

The top college basketball programs in the country are pursuing Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen), the best high school basketball player in the country. Jake, Jesus' father, is a convicted felon who is spending time at the Attica Correctional Facility for accidentally killing his wife, Martha, Jesus' mother, six years ago. The governor, an influential alumnus of "Big State," one of the universities Jesus is considering, releases Jake temporarily so that he can persuade his son to sign with the governor's college. If he succeeds, he will be released from prison early.

On his first day out of prison, Jake calls his daughter, Mary Shuttlesworth (Zelda Harris), on his first day out, and she is delighted to see him. When Jesus gets home from school, he refuses to look his father in the eyes and orders his sister to remove the "stranger" from their living room. Later, Jesus agrees to meet with his father at a different place than Mary. Jake tries unsuccessfully throughout the film to persuade Jesus to attend Big State. Eventually, he reveals the governor's arrangement. However, Jesus looks to be unconcerned by his father's predicament.

Flashbacks show the younger Jesus' arduous basketball training under his father's supervision, as well as the night an argument between Jake and Jesus turned violent, with Jake inadvertently killing Jesus' mother after she interfered.

Dakota Barns (Milla Jovovich), a prostitute who resides in the room next to Jake in the run-down motel that the warden has booked for him, is intertwined with the Shuttlesworth family's story. Dakota's procurer and friend, are abusing her, which Jake hears through the thin walls. Jake is shown throughout the film healing Dakota's wounds and giving her some of his money to use for his bills during his week out of prison. He takes an interest in her as well. Dakota is seen on a Greyhound bus leaving New York City in one of the film's last moments.

On recruiting visits to major basketball programs, Jesus is enticed by promises of money and women. He's also thinking about joining the NBA to play professionally sooner and help himself and his sister get out of poverty. Jake finally invites Jesus to a one-on-one basketball game. If Jake wins, Jesus will sign a letter of intent to play for Big State, but if Jesus wins, he will be free to choose his own team. Jake tired out during the game after a competitive start, and Jesus won. As Jake is being collected for transportation back to Attica, he says to Jesus.

Jesus eventually decides to sign with Big State and offers Jake his blessing. However, because Jesus did not sign the letter of intent, the governor does not grant Jake the promised reduction, and Jake's work release is created in the media as an escape from jail before being recaptured. Jake eventually achieves liberation by giving his ambitions and burdens to his son, Jesus, as symbolized by his old basketball being magically thrown over the jail wall and onto the Big State court where Jesus is practicing alone. Jesus grasps the ball, certain that it contains a message of hope from his father.

Some trifles from He Got Game (1998)

Spike Lee wanted Kobe Bryant to play Jesus Shuttlesworth in the film. While Kobe enjoyed the storyline and the concept of working with Spike, he had just ended his rookie season in the NBA (1996), had hit multiple airballs in the Lakers' heartbreaking playoff loss to the Utah Jazz, and was planning a fitness routine to help him maintain his strength for the lengthier NBA seasons (a major adjustment, as Kobe went straight from high school to the pros). So he convinced Spike that the summer of 1997 was too essential to waste time producing the picture, and Spike immediately went out and found Ray Allen, who swiftly agreed to play the lead.

Hill Harper plays a high school student in the film. Harper was 31 years old at the time.

Ray Allen and Spike Lee have discussed the possibility of a de facto sequel to this picture, with Allen imagining Jesus Shuttlesworth nearing the end of a successful professional career (much like Allen himself). Spike Lee quickly and enthusiastically shared a photograph of Miami Heat players wearing customized jerseys with nicknames or initials as part of an NBA promotion.

In addition to the many coaches and players reprising their roles, three of Jesus' teammates, Travis Best, Walter McCarty, and John Wallace, were played by NBA players at the time of the film's release. The Chick, who shows Jesus about Tech University, was played by Rick Fox, another NBA star. As of 2014, Fox has a long list of acting credits, but this is Best and McCarty's first screen appearance, while Wallace has only one other acting credit, in another Spike Lee film, Bamboozled (2000).

NBA players like Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury were considered for Jesus Shuttlesworth. Both, however, refused to audition, which was a deal-breaker for Spike Lee.

The soundtrack is a blend of Public Enemy and Aaron Copland, with the former being an iconic American hip-hop group and the latter being a quintessentially American composer. The juxtaposition of the two musical artforms seemed to be ideal for Spike Lee and the basketball-related subject matter.

Mistakes on He Got Game (1998)

  • At first, D'Andre isn't wearing a ring when he initially touches Lala's neck, but by the next scene, he's wearing a silver ring on his ring finger.
