Don't Look Up is a 2021 American satirical science fiction black comedy/drama film written, produced, and directed by Adam McKay (with Kevin Messick's help), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Cate Blanchett, and Meryl Streep, and starring an It tells the story of two astronomers who try to warn humanity about an impending comet that will destroy humanity. The film is a satire of government and media indifference to the climate catastrophe, and the impact event is an allegory for climate change.

The film, which was produced by Hyperobject Industries and Bluegrass Films, was announced in November 2019 and sold to Netflix a few months later by Paramount Pictures. Lawrence was the first member of the cast to sign on, followed by DiCaprio after negotiations with McKay about screenplay changes; the remainder of the ensemble was added through 2020. Filming was supposed to start in April 2020 in Massachusetts, but it was postponed owing to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic; it finally started in November 2020 and finished in February 2021.

On December 10, 2021, Don't Look Up had a limited theatrical premiere before being released on Netflix on December 24. Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising the performers but disagreeing with the merits of McKay's satire; some thought it was sharp, while others thought it was condescending and heavy-handed. Despite the negative reviews, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute rated the film one of the top 10 films of 2021. Storyline: Don't Look Up (2021)

A previously unknown comet is discovered well inside Jupiter's orbit at 4.6 au from the Sun by Kate Dibiasky, a Michigan State University astronomy Ph.D. candidate working with the Subaru Telescope. Her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy, estimates that it will hit Earth in around six months and is large enough to inflict a global extinction event, which NASA affirms internally. Dibiasky and Mindy submit their findings to the White House, accompanied by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office head, Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe. President Janie Orlean and her son, Chief of Staff Jason, are uninterested.

Dibiasky and Mindy are urged by Oglethorpe to inform the media, which they do on a morning talk program. When hosts Jack Bremmer and Brie Evantee approach the subject lightly, Dibiasky loses her cool and yells about the threat, resulting in widespread internet mockery. Dibiasky's lover publicly criticizes her, while Mindy is praised for his good looks. The true threat posed by the comet receives little public notice, and Orlean's Director of NASA, a prominent donor to Orlean who has no training in astronomy, denies it. When Orlean is embroiled in a sex scandal involving her Supreme Court nominee, she diverts attention and boosts her support ratings by verifying the comet's threat and revealing a plan to strike and divert the comet using nuclear weapons.

When Peter Isherwell, the millionaire CEO of IT company BASH and another top donor, discovers that the comet contains trillions of dollars worth of rare-earth elements, Orlean abruptly aborts the mission. The White House agrees to commercially exploit the comet by fragmenting and recovering it from the ocean using new technology offered by BASH's Nobel Laureates in an unscientific scheme. To co-opt Dibiasky and Oglethorpe, the White House sidelines them and hires Mindy as the National Science Advisor. Dibiasky tries to rally public opposition to the idea, but gives up after Orlean's administration threatens him. Mindy becomes a well-known advocate for the comet's commercial prospects, and she begins an affair with Evantee.

Others who demand the comet's annihilation, those who denounce alarmism and believe that mining the comet would provide jobs, and those who reject the comet's existence are divided. Dibiasky returns to Illinois and begins a fatalistic romance with Yule, a shoplifter she meets while working in a store. Mindy's wife returns to Michigan without him after confronting him about his affair. Mindy, enraged by the administration, shouts on live television, condemning Orlean for downplaying the imminent doom and raising questions about humanity's indifference.

Mindy reconciles with Dibiasky after being cut off from the government as the comet becomes visible from Earth. Mindy, Dibiasky, and Oglethorpe launch a social media campaign against Orlean and BASH, urging people to "Just Look Up" and urging other countries to conduct their comet intercept operations. Because China, India, and Russia were left out of the comet mining contract, they planned a combined effort to deflect the comet, but their spacecraft was destroyed in an explosion, leaving Mindy upset. Bash's attempt to disintegrate the comet likewise fails, and everyone realizes humanity is doomed.

Isherwell, Orlean, and the rest of their elite circle board a sleeper starship in search of an Earth-like planet, leaving Jason behind unwittingly. Mindy declines Orlean's offer of two berths on the ship, preferring to spend his farewell evening with his family, Dibiasky, Oglethorpe, and Yule. As predicted, the comet collides with Earth, unleashing a global calamity and an extinction-level event.

The 2,000 people who left Earth before the impact landed 22,740 years later on a beautiful extraterrestrial planet, bringing their cryogenic hibernation to an end. They exit their spacecraft, generally naked and empty-handed, to enjoy the habitable world. Isherwell warns everyone not to pet the approaching Bronterocs, as Orlean is slain by the bird-like Bronteroc.

In an after-credits scene, Jason emerges from the wreckage after surviving the comet, calls for his mother, and tries to post on social media with his phone.

Jennifer Lawrence's character discusses the Chicxulub asteroid, which collided with Earth 66 million years ago in what is now Mexico. The asteroid, which was predicted to be 10 kilometers (six miles) wide, killed 75 percent of all life on Earth. The asteroid, dubbed the "dinosaur killer," created a crater 150 kilometers (93 miles) in diameter and 20 kilometers (12 miles) in depth.

At 20:45, President Orlean pronounces Dr. Oglethorpe's name as Ogilvy. In H.G. Wells' War Of The Worlds, Ogilvy is the name of the astronomer who first notices the start of the Martian invasion.

Leonardo DiCaprio consulted with real-life astronomer and film consultant Amy Mainzer to help him perform his character effectively. According to Adam McKay, DiCaprio had lengthy discussions about the underlying real mathematics and received approximately six months of quality orbital dynamics training.

Jennifer Lawrence filmed most of her sequences with a fractured tooth, which she couldn't heal owing to limitations imposed during the COVID-19 outbreak. The missing tooth was added after the fact.
