Scream (2022)

Scream (also known as Scream 5) is a 2022 American slasher film written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The film is the fifth in the Scream franchise. Despite being marketed as a reboot, the picture is a straight sequel to Scream 4 (2011) and the first in the franchise not directed by Wes Craven. At the start of the ending credits, the picture is dedicated to Craven. Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid star in the picture, which also features Marley Shelton, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell, who return from previous chapters. In this film, a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and goes after a group of adolescents in order to resurrect secrets from the town's dark history.

Although the possibility of a fifth and sixth Scream sequel was considered after the release of Scream 4 in 2011, Craven, writer Kevin Williamson, and executive producer Harvey Weinstein all expressed reservations after the fourth film's underwhelming box office performance. Scream was then turned into a television series, which aired on MTV for two seasons from 2015 to 2016, followed by a third season on VH1 in July 2019. The rights to the Scream series were acquired by Spyglass Media Group in November 2019, following the 2017 sexual assault claims against Harvey Weinstein and the closure of The Weinstein Company, which stated a new film would be developed. Williamson, who was returning as an executive producer, affirmed the picture would not be a reboot the following year, and Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were engaged to helm the film in March 2020. Later that month, Campbell and Arquette were confirmed to return, with Cox and the new cast members joining throughout the summer. Filming took place in North Carolina from September to November 2020, after being postponed due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Several drafts of the screenplay were written, and several more scenes were filmed to avoid narrative leaks.

Scream was released in theaters on January 14, 2022, in the United States. Critics lauded the picture for honoring Craven's reputation while also remaining a meta-commentary on horror films, with some considering it the finest of the Scream sequels.

Storyline: Scream (2022)

High schooler Tara Carpenter is home alone when Ghostface breaks in and attacks her twenty-five years after Billy Loomis and Stu Macher ravaged the community of Woodsboro. Tara is severely injured, but she survives.

Tara's older sister, Sam Carpenter, is informed about the attack by Tara's friend, Wes Hicks, while she is out of town. Sam travels to Woodsboro with her boyfriend, Richie, to visit Tara in the hospital, where she meets up with the rest of Tara's friends — Amber Freeman, Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Liv McKenzie. Vince Schneider, Liv's summer affair, is the latest victim of Ghostface. After a meeting with Ghostface in the hospital, Sam, who suffers from Billy Loomis hallucinations, reveals to Tara that Billy is her biological father. This is the reason she left town and got separated from Tara.

The next day, Sam and Richie pay a visit to the reclusive Dewey Riley, who has been in a rough place since his divorce from Gale Weathers. They want his assistance in apprehending the assailant. Before joining the youngsters in Mindy and Chad's house, he phones Sidney Prescott and Gale to warn them about Ghostface's reappearance. There, he reconnects with the twins' mother, Martha Meeks, Randy's sister. Stu's nephew is revealed to be Vince. Sam is accused of being the killer after the three assaults on people who are tied to the original perpetrators in some way. She storms out, enraged. Wes and his mother, Sheriff Judy Hicks, are murdered at their home by Ghostface. Dewey meets up with Gale, who has come to town to cover the story. Ghostface attacks Tara and Richie at the hospital, but Dewey and Sam stop him. When Dewey tries to make sure Ghostface is indeed dead, he is slain.

When Sidney arrives in town, he is greeted by Gale and Sam. Sidney approaches Sam and asks him to assist in the hunt for the killer, but Sam declines, preferring to leave town with Richie and Tara. Sidney warns them that there will be no way out; Ghostface will pursue them. Sidney and Gale pursue the trio to Amber's house, which turns out to be Stu's former home and the scene of the original incidents. Chad and Mindy are stabbed by Ghostface there.

Amber kills Liv as the friend group gathers, presenting herself as the murderer. Amber shoots Gale when Gale and Sidney arrive. Tara's assailant and Amber's accomplice are revealed to be Richie. He stabs Sam, and he and Amber drag Sam, Sidney, and Gale into the kitchen, where Sidney had fought Billy and Stu for the first time. Richie and Amber admit to being rabid fans of the Stab series. They are dissatisfied with its direction and want to write a new novel based on "actual events," with Sam as the protagonist because she is Billy's daughter. Gale fires a shot at Amber, who lands on the stove and catches fire. Sam is hurt, but a vision of Billy leads her to Amber's knife on the floor, which she uses to stab Richie numerous times before shooting him. Amber, who has been badly burned, tries to assault the group again, but Tara shoots her down.

Tara is rushed to the hospital along with the Meeks twins. Sam expresses his gratitude to Sidney and Gale for their assistance. Gale refuses to write about the fresh killings to keep the criminals' identities hidden and allow them to die in peace. Instead, she intends to pen a moving homage to Dewey.

Some trifles from Scream (2022)

During filming breaks, David Arquette, a licensed Bob Ross painting instructor, taught several of the cast members how to paint like the iconic artist.

We can hear birds chirping at the end of the picture, when the title card reads "For Wes," in honor of the franchise's original director, Wes Craven. Craven was an enthusiastic bird watcher and enthusiast in his spare time, which explains why.

This is the first "Scream" film not directed by Wes Craven, who died from cancer in August 2015. He is honored in the film, and one of the characters is named "Wes."

The fact that Dewey never addressed his sister Tatum or her death in the previous sequels was widely panned, giving the impression that she had been forgotten. In this photo, we can see that he still keeps her ashes on the mantle.

Scream 5 will be released on January 14, 2022, 25 years and 25 days after the original film, which was released on December 20, 1996.

While at NYU, Mason Gooding published an essay about the first Scream (1996). During his audition, he told the directors of the new Scream (2022) about his essay, and they asked if they could read it. Mason was later cast in the sequel to Scream.

Richie is watching a YouTube video about Stab 8, and one of the thumbnail recommendations below it is an interview with Kirby Reed, a survivor from Woodsboro.

Neve Campbell revealed in an interview on May 6, 2020, that the new directors approached her and that she is now in talks to reprise her role as Sidney in Scream 5. On September 10, 2020, it was confirmed that she would repeat her role, which Campbell herself announced on social media.

It was Neve Campbell's idea to add Sidney's phrase to the film, "I'm Sidney Prescott. Of course, I have a gun."

Funworld has granted Spyglass Media Group permission to utilize the original Ghostface mask in Scream 5.
