The Night House is a psychological horror film directed by David Bruckner and based on a script by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It was released in 2020. Rebecca Hall plays a widow who finds a horrible secret about the house her late husband built in the film. In addition to Sarah Goldberg, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin, and Vondie Curtis-Hall, the film stars Sarah Goldberg, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin, and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

The Night House had its international premiere on January 24, 2020, at the Sundance Film Festival, and was released in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on August 20, 2021. Critics have given it mostly favourable reviews.

Storyline: The Night House

Owen, Beth's husband, committed suicide recently. He took a boat out from their lakehouse and shot himself in the head with a rifle Beth had no idea he owned. She spends her nights drinking and sifting through Owen's possessions, devastated by his death. She insists on keeping her normal teaching job and attempts to appear steady and in control, much to the dismay of her friend Claire and her next-door neighbor Mel. Owen's foreboding suicide letter, in which he claims that "Nothing exists. Nothing is pursuing you. Now you're safe "Beth is still perplexed. She begins to experience bizarre, otherworldly experiences at night, which she dismisses at first as dreams but gradually discovers are real. Beth discovers floor blueprints for the reverse of their lake house while browsing through Owen's possessions.

Loud music starts blaring downstairs one night, and Beth receives a phantom text and call from Owen's phone. She discovers a photo of a woman who looks extremely similar to her on her phone after discovering and charging it. Claire asks her to quit researching Owen's background because she fears he's having an affair. An intoxicated Beth says that she died for four minutes in a car accident years ago and saw nothing when she died after a night out with Claire and their coworkers. Owen always disagreed with her and was on the verge of persuading her to change her views before he died. Beth also says she's depressed and that Owen started sleepwalking a year ago, and she's worried that she's passing on her negative emotions to him. Beth is startled by a ghostly presence that night, and she sees other terrified ladies running through the woods. She discovers blood on the boat where Owen shot himself while investigating and senses an unseen presence.

Beth discovers a reversed, exact copy of her and Owen's house and sees ghostly figures of women with Owen while crossing the lake to explore a weird set of lights. Before she can explore, she passes out and wakes up at her own house the next morning. She returns to the house and is greeted by Mel, who expresses concern for Beth's mental health. She locates the house, which is unfinished and unoccupied this time. Beth takes a bizarre statue from the house and confronts Mel, who maintains he has never seen a house, but reveals he once saw Owen in the woods late at night with a lady that resembled Beth. While continuing her inquiry, Beth discovers more images of women who resemble her on Owen's laptop and recognizes an occult voodoo doll in one of Owen's books. Owen appears to have been investigating how to deceive and capture demonic beings.

Beth tracks down and visits the bookstore where Owen purchased the occult books, when she runs across Madelyne, one of the women in Owen's images. Beth is furious when she learns what happened to Owen, but Madelyne denies sleeping with him. Beth is disturbed by a silhouette of Owen when she returns home. Claire invites Beth to spend a few days away from the house when she visits her. Beth agrees and returns home to begin packing. She threatens the spirits in the house, demanding to know the truth, before leaving to return to Claire's. Madelyne arrives at the residence shortly after. She begins by telling Beth about Owen, inviting her over to see the reverse house. He tried to choke Owen while kissing her, but he quickly apologized after she became frightened and ran away. A drunken Madelyne follows her out the door. When Beth goes to the reverse house, she stumbles and finds many bodies under the floorboards of the ladies Owen photographed. Beth, terrified, tries to contact Claire but is unable to do so.

Beth is harassed by the invisible force once more, and she hugs it, mistaking it for Owen's soul. The spirit tells her that it isn't Owen and shows her visions of Owen murdering numerous women. When Beth tries to exit the house, she watches Owen continue to attack and murder the ladies. The monster attacks Beth and drags her through the house, eventually revealing that "it" was actually what Beth saw when she died, "Nothing." Nothing explains why it sought to persuade Owen to kill Beth to resurrect her, but he refused. To mislead Nothing but Nothing, he created the reverse house and murdered Beth's lookalikes. Nothing but Nothing soon recognized the trick and resisted. It confines Beth in the same posture as the statue she found in the house.

Claire arrives at the house in the morning and discovers indications of a struggle. Claire and Mel run out to the pier after learning that the gun Owen used to murder himself is missing, where they discover Beth floating out on the boat with the gun. The demon in Nothing's dimension tries to persuade Beth to join it and kill herself, but Claire's shouts awaken Beth. Claire returns to the dock after retrieving Beth from the boat. Beth notices the outline of the devil floating in the boat and says, "It's nothing," implying that she has finally overcome her sadness.
