Enchanted is a 2007 American live-action/animated musical fantasy romantic comedy film. Walt Disney Pictures, Sonnenfeld Productions, and Josephson Entertainment produced Enchanted. Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, Idina Menzel, Rachel Covey, and Susan Sarandon star in the picture, which was written by Bill Kelly and directed by Kevin Lima. The film is a live-action/animated hybrid centered on an archetypal Disney Princess who is thrust into the live-action environment of New York City from her traditional animation world.

Through a combination of live-action filmmaking, traditional animation, and computer-generated images, the film is both an homage to and a self-parody of Disney's animated features, making several references to Disney's prior works. It's the first time conventional animation has appeared in a Disney feature picture since the studio's choice to switch to computer animation in 2004. The songs for Enchanted were written and produced by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who had previously written songs for Disney films. Menken also composed the score. The animated scenes were created by the Pasadena-based company James Baxter Animation. The live-action sequences were shot in and around New York City.

Enchanted had its world premiere at the London Film Festival on October 20, 2007, followed by a wide distribution in the United States on November 21, 2007. Enchanted was a critical and commercial success, establishing Adams as a leading lady and grossing over $340 million worldwide. ([3] Three Saturn Awards were given to it: Best Fantasy Film, Best Actress for Adams, and Best Music for Menken. Enchanted also garnered two Golden Globe awards and three Oscar nominations for Best Original Song at the 80th Academy Awards. A sequel, dubbed "Disenchanted," is in the works and will launch on Disney+ in 2019.

Storyline: Enchanted

Narissa, the cruel and merciless queen and an evil witch in the animated fairy tale realm of Andalasia, plots to maintain her claim to the throne, which she would lose if her stepson, Prince Edward, finds true love and marries. She enlists the help of Nathaniel, her devoted servant, to keep Edward occupied by hunting trolls. A young woman named Giselle fantasizes about finding a prince and living happily ever after. She, her chipmunk pal Pip, and forest animals collaborate to create a handcrafted statue of her true love, whom she glimpsed in a dream. When Edward hears Giselle singing, he decides to track her down. To get rid of Giselle, Nathaniel releases a captured troll, but Edward saves her. She and Edward are instantaneously smitten with each other and intend to marry the next day.

Narissa, disguised as an old hag, intercepts Giselle on her way to the wedding and pushes her into a well, where she is turned into a live-action version of herself and brought to the real-world Times Square in New York. Giselle, terrified and perplexed, swiftly becomes disoriented and destitute. Meanwhile, Robert, a divorce lawyer who is widowed, is planning to propose to his girlfriend Nancy. At Robert and his young daughter Morgan's request, he reluctantly agrees to let Giselle spend the night in their apartment at Giselle's request, believing Giselle to be a princess.

Pip and Edward go on a rescue mission into the real world, where they are transformed into live-action versions of themselves as well. Pip, who is now a true chipmunk, can no longer speak and communicates only through squeaks. Nathaniel is dispatched by Narissa to trail Edward and obstruct him. Narissa visits Nathaniel and hands him three poisoned apples, each of which will put the person who eats one to sleep until the clock strikes twelve, after which they will die. Meanwhile, Nancy arrives to take Morgan to school after Giselle summons insects and rodents to clean Robert's flat. She meets Giselle and walks away, believing Robert is disloyal. Robert is unhappy at first but decides to spend the day with Giselle because she is vulnerable in the city. Giselle interrogates Robert about his relationship with Nancy and attempts to reunite the two by sending Nancy flowers and an invitation to the Woolworth Building's costume party.

Giselle is found at Robert's apartment by Edward. While Edward is ready to return to Andalasia and marry Giselle, she recommends that they go on a date and get to know each other better beforehand. After Nathaniel fails to poison Giselle twice, Narissa decides to return to the real world and kill herself. At the ball, Robert and Giselle dance romantically with each other. Giselle and Edward then prepare to go, but Giselle is saddened by the fact that she will be leaving Robert behind. As the old hag, Narissa enters and offers Giselle the last poisoned apple, vowing to erase her painful memories. Giselle takes a taste, passes out, and slips into a deep sleep with only minutes to live. Narissa tries to flee with Giselle's body, but Edward confronts her.

Nathaniel discloses her plan after realizing Narissa never cared about him. Robert knows that the only force strong enough to break the apple's charm is a genuine love kiss. When Edward's kiss fails to awaken Giselle, he and Nancy convince Robert to kiss her. She awakens when Robert kisses her. Narissa, enraged, transforms into a dragon and kidnaps Robert. As the dragon prepares to send Robert to his death, Giselle takes Edward's sword and pursues Narissa to the top of the structure. Pip comes to Giselle's aid and assists in the defeat of Narissa by causing her to tumble to the streets below and explode in glitter. Robert is on the verge of falling, but Giselle catches him and they share another kiss.

Everyone has a happy new life as Edward and Nancy fall in love and marry in Andalasia, becoming king and queen, while Nathaniel, who stays in New York, and Pip, who returns to Andalasia, both publish successful autobiographies based on their real-life experiences. In New York, Giselle establishes a successful fashion design business and has a loving family with Robert and Morgan.

Some trifles: Enchanted

Giselle begins by constructing a model of her "true love." Its attire is never worn by Prince Edward, but it is worn by Robert during the ball near the end of the film.

The primary female heroine in conventional Disney films normally transforms from an average lady to a princess by the end of the film. Giselle, the main character in this film, is a would-be princess who transforms into a regular modern lady. (In her place, the supporting character, Nancy, becomes a princess.)

Giselle's outfit evolves as she matures into a modern woman. She starts in an over-the-top bridal gown, then moves on to a princessy long gown, a very pretty yet short dress, and lastly, a sophisticated evening gown. Similarly, Robert's style transitions from suit and tie to more casual attire, culminating in a very prince-like ensemble during the ball.

Giselle was eventually dropped from the Disney Princess lineup. Elsa from Frozen (2013) and Frozen II (2019) was voiced by Idina Menzel (Nancy Tremaine), another part that was originally planned and assumed to be added to the Disney Princess line but was not. Nancy marries Edward at the end of the film, and according to the novelization, she becomes Queen of Andalasia. Elsa also chastises her sister Anna for wanting to marry a man she'd only recently met, something Nancy does at the end of the film.

The folks on tour buses next to Edward who was laughing and pointing at him when he was on top of the bus weren't extras, but actual tourists.

Idina Menzel, a Tony Award winner, and Broadway veteran does not sing in the film. In an interview, Menzel expressed her gratitude for being hired only as an actress.

Giselle (Amy Adams) donned a bridal gown that weighed 45 pounds. Adams was taught how to move in the outfit by a stunt double. Because "the entire weight was on my hips, so occasionally it felt like I was in traction," she described it as "grueling."

Several non-singers, including Patrick Dempsey, made their singing debut in this film. Nancy, played by Idina Menzel, who has two Tony Award nominations and one victory for Broadway musical singing roles, is the only main character who does not sing.

Disney had planned to add Giselle to the Disney Princess line-up, as seen by the Giselle doll's packaging proclaiming her Disney Princess title at a 2007 toy fair, but they decided against it when they discovered they would have to pay for life-long rights to Amy Adams' image.

Mistakes: Enchanted

Sam, Robert's secretary, says that she has no idea where Giselle is from-Andalusia, Andalasia, whatever. She's called every travel agent and airline she can think of, but she's still not sure if it's a country or a city. Surprisingly, neither the travel agency nor the airline appears to have informed Sam that Andalusia (with its beautiful and historic capital, Seville) is a large territory in sunny southern Spain that is a popular European tourist destination.
Nathaniel is closely followed by a large green bush (a scaled-up topiary representation of Narissa's head) down the 'wishing well.' When he reaches New York City, though, the bush has vanished.
A fight breaks out between Nathaniel and Pip in the restaurant. "The pizza is breathing," Morgan says as Pip crawls beneath the pizza. We can see the gadget on the bottom of the pizza that makes it "breathe" when Nathaniel pulls it up to put it in the oven.
The bus that Prince Edward stabs, New York City Transit route X90, does not travel through Times Square.
The "King and Queen's Waltz" is the final dance, therefore the rhythm must be 1-2-3, 1-2-3, etc., but it is a slower 1—2—1—2 (or 1—2—3—4 if you want). Each beat could be visualized as a snappy 1-2-3, but no one dances that fast. The dance is more akin to a foxtrot than a waltz.
Nathaniel brings Edward to a motel, a restaurant, and other places where money or another kind of payment is required. Nathaniel also works as a cab driver and a waiter in New York, skills that one would not expect an "Andalasian" to possess. Queen Narissa, on the other hand, appears to be familiar with New York and could have arranged for Nathaniel to avoid difficulty in these places before he embarked on his mission.
Without money, credit cards, or identity, Giselle takes the train from Times Square to the Bowery.
Even though the film is set in the summer, Pip emerges from his hotel room to find snow on the street.
