Storyline: Monte Carlo

Grace Bennett (Selena Gomez) is a New York University-bound Texas high school student who works as a waitress with her best friend, high school dropout Emma Perkins (Katie Cassidy), to save money for a post-graduation vacation to Paris. Grace's stepfather pays for her overbearing older stepsister Meg Kelly (Leighton Meester) to accompany them on their journey. Despite her boyfriend Owen's (Cory Monteith) marriage proposal, Emma travels to Paris.

The vacation rapidly turns out to be a letdown, with the party discovering they were duped into a tight hotel room and a tour that moves too quickly for anyone to fully appreciate anything. The three girls seek shelter from the rain in a fancy hotel when their tour guide abandons them. Grace is mistaken for the spoilt British heiress Cordelia Winthrop-Scott (Selena Gomez), Grace's duplicate, who leaves rather than attend an auction for a Romanian charity for which she is to contribute a Bulgari necklace, by the hotel personnel and paparazzi. Despite Meg's protests, the three girls spend the night in Cordelia's suite and travel to Monte Carlo the next day with Cordelia's luggage.

The girls meet Theo Marchand (Pierre Boulanger), the son of the millionaire who is sponsoring the charity, in Monte Carlo. Because he dislikes Cordelia's spoiled demeanor, Theo is cold to the three, but he leads them to a ball, where Grace successfully tricks Cordelia's aunt Alicia (Catherine Tate), and Emma dances with a prince (Giulio Berruti). Meg's friend Riley (Luke Bracey), an Australian traveler and ex-rugby player whom Meg met briefly in Paris, is reunited with her. They discover they have interests in common and spend time together before he departs for Italy.

When Grace goes to play polo, Alicia notices the impersonation due to Grace's distinct riding style and verifies her suspicions by calling the genuine Cordelia. According to Alicia, Grace is a doppelganger hired by Cordelia to stand in for her while she parties. Grace persuades her not to imperil the charity auction by threatening to expose the impersonation, and she agrees to remain silent.

Theo is drawn to "Cordelia's" forthright personality, while Emma is invited to a yacht party by a prince she met earlier. Emma wears the Bulgari necklace to the party but runs into Meg on the way, who takes it for safekeeping but then forgets about it, leaving it in Riley's backpack. The prince's unpleasant behavior, snideness, and arrogance toward the waitresses disillusion Emma at the party.

Owen travels to Monte Carlo in the hopes of finding Emma. Cordelia also comes, and she notices Grace's appearance at the event in the newspaper. When she realizes the necklace is missing, she phones the cops. The girls had gone looking for Riley, but when he arrives at the hotel with the necklace, they discover Cordelia in the room. The girls panic and throw Cordelia on the couch when she threatens to withdraw the necklace from the auction. Grace covers for the cops when they arrive at the door, muffled by her screaming. They then bind her to a chair and gag her by shoving an apple into her mouth, allowing Grace to attend the auction in her place.

Cordelia eventually manages to flee and exposes Grace's auction deception. She wants Grace's arrest, but following Grace's sincere public confession, Alicia offers an unexpectedly high price of €6 million for the necklace to save her. Meg joins Riley on his global travels, Owen and Emma move into their own home in Texas, and Theo and Grace reunite at the Romanian school where the former leads and the latter volunteers to teach.

Some trifles from Monte Carlo

Selena Gomez's character has the first name "Grace," while Leighton Meester's character has the last name "Kelly." Grace Kelly, an Academy Award-winning American actress, married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1955 and became Princess Consort of Monaco. Furthermore, Monte Carlo is located in Monaco, and Leighton Meester's character in the 2007 film "Gossip Girl" married the Prince of Monaco.

The film's original stars were Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts, but the producers chose to shoot it with a younger ensemble. Kidman stayed on as a producer as well.

Two of the film's actors, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy, previously worked together on the CW show Gossip Girl (2007).

The project was filmed for four days in Paris and two weeks in Monaco. The remaining scenes were shot in Hungary, with Budapest serving as a stand-in for Paris and Monte Carlo. The filming took place at Raleigh Studios Budapest, which served as a stand-in for Monte Carlo's Hotel de Paris.

The narrative is identical to that of The Lizzie McGuire Movie, with the two main characters graduating and going on vacation, and the main character is mistaken for a look-alike.

Mistakes in Monte Carlo

  • Meg, Grace, and Emma have on June 19, 2010 airport stamps in their passports. Owen's passport has a stamp from June 22, 2010. When Owen arrives in Monte Carlo, however, he displays a newspaper edition from June 10, 2010, which features Emma, Grace, and Meg on the front page.
  • By installing a dimmer light switch without first turning off the main electricity, Owen risks electrocuting himself at the end of the movie, only to impress Emma.
  • The eggs on the platter when Grace is handed the breakfast order at the start of the movie are crunchy and burnt. However, when she presents the dish to the customer, the eggs on the plate are not the same as the ones on the previous plate.
  • In her Monte Carlo hotel room, Emma is watching Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. All of Grace Kelly's films were forbidden from ever being shown in Monaco, including the capital city of Monte Carlo, when she became Princess Consort.
  • When you check into a hotel in another country, the hotel will want your passport to register you as a guest. This means that the hotel desk worker in Monte Carlo would immediately recognize Selena's character as a fraud.
  • Emma, Meg, Grace, and Owen received national exit stamps at the airport when they arrived. When entering a country, the arrow on the stamp should be pointing to the right, not the left.
